While visiting Urumqi China, Museum is must to visit. Nice place showing China's tradition and Chinese history including old mummies.

This museum is absolutely excellent. I may be a little biased because I studied archaeology and have read extensively about the beauty of Loulan, but I was blown away by the museum. One note, when I went all the locals were required to show their IDs and I was asked for my passport. I didn't have it, but my NY state driver's license sufficed. I recommend bringing your passport just in case though.

My 2 days in Urumqi was spent in the museum. To thoroughly to take in all the artifacts. the mummies, musical instruments, the tribal clothes really took time.it was great we were allowed to take photos.Transport by public bus from the Jinhang hotel where we stayed dropped us of at Museum.Worthwhile visit though I did think the museum in Turpan was set up better.

It is easy to get one's expectations set high for this museum. Not only are the TripAdvisor reviews generally positive, the architecture is quite grand and befitting a place that holds some significant treasures. In fact, a large part of the museum has a quality that reminded me of many US State Historical Society museums. The most interesting section for me was the lower floor that was mostly dedicated to the large number of ethnic minorities that inhabit the Xinjiang Uyghar Autonomous Region. The displays showed men and women in their traditional garb with placards describing their customs, history, etc. There are the Uyghars, Kazahks, Tartars, Hui, Mongolians, etc., etc. Some of the top floor held antiquities and several mummies. As one of the reviewers noted the ethnic minorities face many challenges but here their culture is celebrated. Overall, I thought the museum was worth a brief stroll through, especially to learn about the many ethnic minorities that make up the city and particularly surrounding countryside.

We visited this as part of a Wendy Wu tour. There are two main highlights - the mummies room and the minorities room. The mummies are really interesting and are dried corpses. The room wasn't as large as I had expected and there were about 6 or so mummies. You can see their dress and even hair and nails. The one supposed to be beautiful didn't look it!The minorities room has a display for 26 minorities each including things such as dress, music, festivals etc. this was quite interesting to look at.There were a couple of other halls some of which had changing installations. All worth a look at - when we were there there was an interesting one on paintings.
