Hakodate tram is convenient and easy to use. There's a station near Hakodate station. Time of tram arrival and path are clearly written on the board. When boarding the tram, take a ticket near the door. As your travel the computer screen in front will show u where u are, what's the next stop, and the fare (Japanese buses are the same too). When disembark, insert money in the machine and it'll give back the change. The drivers are all so courteous and patience.

I had a day pass for the tram and went to Goryokaku for dinner. I tried to catch the tram back to the Hakodate station area around 7pm, only to find out that it stopped at 6:15pm that night! This information came from a driver going in the opposite direction, who got off the tram and 'told' us there were no more trams, using sign language. There were about 3 Chinese tourists and a few Japanese people. There were no alternative options given to people with day passes (600 yen), so we had to get on a bus that cost us an additional 240 yen. Sure, it's not hundreds of dollars, but it's the principle that bothers me. Why sell a daily pass if your service will finish so early!?

The tram takes you to all the major landmarks and attractions in Hakodate. You collect the ticket from the ticket dispenser when you get on the tram. When you get to your stop, hand over the ticket to the tram driver and pay the fare. Recommend to buy the day pass if you plan to take at least 3 tram rides on that day; it will save you money. You can buy the day pass from the tram driver when you get to your designated stop.

With their route alignment it's sensible to take a day pass on this tram and hop on off. Most places are 3-10 mins walk from the closest stop. At the very least it's a great way to see large part of Hakodate if u r short on time. Choose a hotel enroute will make this even better experience.

Great route alignment covering most tourist spots. It's great if u intend to travel independently. Get the day pass and avoid the hassle on coins scramble upon exit.

When you get on the tram, take the small ticket ejected out of the machine. There's a number on it and you can look at the board to find your number and see how much you gotta pay when you get off. If you do not have enough change, either put a 1000yen note or a 500yen coin into the coin slot/note slot and get your money back in small change or pass it to the train conductor who'll do it for you (since you're a tourist). Drop your ticket and the exact change into the bigger slot on the machine and leave. I didn't have enough change for almost all the rides I rode and it was embarrassing to hold up the queue behind me while I wait for the machine to give me my small change. Note: ALWAYS have the exact amount of tram fare on you. Especially during peak hours.

The Hakodate street tram is an easy mode of transportation to get around Hakodate and to visit all the tourist attractions. It’s a nice slow ride to take in the atmosphere of Hakodate. For easy, reference, here are the tourist attractions and the nearest street tram station according to my own research and experience- Hakodate Ekimae : Hakodate Morning Market Square, Hakodate JR station, Loisir Hotel Hakodate- Goryokaku Koen-mae : Goryokaku Park and Goryokaku Tower (15 mins walk from the station. Just follow the signages)- Jujigai : Red Brick Warehouses, Motomachi district, Mount Hakodate, Hakodate Ropeway, Russian Orthodox Church, Hakodate Bay area, etcTipsBuy the day pass for unlimited rides on the tram! It’s worth the money if you are taking the street tram to a few places. Get it from the Tourist Information Centre at the Hakodate JR station. Cost is 600 yen (adult) for 1 day pass. Just show it to the conductor/train driver when you are alighting / getting down at your stop at the front (where the driver is seating). You will enter the tram from the back. Don’t have to take a ticket if you have the day pass. The day pass will have the complete street tram map/ guide. If you find this review helpful, please click on the “helpful” button. Thank you!

The drivers were so helpful despite the language barrier. Its fun riding the tram, further more you may not find it in other countries unlike bus. Make sure you enter thru the back door and collect the ticket before getting down thru the front door and pay for your fares.
