We decided to visit the zoo as our young daughter loves animals. Because it was snowing the atmosphere was quite nice as the zoo is located in Maruyama park. However to me the facilities were a bit dated and needed refurbishment. They have the usual lions, monkeys, giraffe, sheep, marine and tropical animals. Overall plan to spend 1-2 hours walking at your leisure through the zoo.

Ticket fee is 600yen. Free for kids below 4yr.A very small and simple gift shop.Restrooms are easily found. It was winter, so it was freezing cold while walking ard.But consolation is, they have indoor observatory. No many animals as compared to Singapore Zoo.But upclose view of the tiger, wolves and most animals. My li'l girl wanted to see the Polar Bear, but it was closed for viewing as the polar bear needed a stress free environment to recuperate after giving birth to a baby polar bear. Anyway, it should be re-opened during Spring. It is not a MUST GO.. but good to go. Perhaps, just once is enough. Spring/Summer will be a better time to visit. It is just too cold , even in March.

This zoo was really fun. It was snowing heavily when I visited the zoo, so I was very pleased to find that all the viewing areas were indoors. Highly recommended!

This is perhaps due to the timing, but we didn't have a great experience here. Now, we are comparing this zoo to smaller size zoos like Perth for instance, but even that, it's not really up to par. The polar bear wasn't available. All the African animals like Lions were kept in small rooms since it was winter, and the enclosure was devoid of anything resembling their habitat. The lions and hyenas did look a little distressed, pacing up and down. The zoo itself just wasn't really maintained very well, and in one enclosure (I think the monkey), the smell was so bad we didn't even enter the hall. Construction workers are all over, and the trails of the zoo is also very confusing, We exited at the west exit and couldn't get back to the main exit from outside. the upside was that it's not every expensive and my 2 year old seem to enjoy the snow more than watching the animals. It's probably better in the summer or any season other than winter. The highlight of the zoo trip was probably when we left and went for a great Udon lunch.

This zoo is simply depressing. The overwhelming majority of the animals live in their cages alone with no chance to socialize. They sleep all day and some of them, such as a leopard that paces back and forth in his cage, are visibly mentally ill. Additionally, some of the animals should not be kept in zoos at all! An eagle with an almost two meter wing span should absolutely not be kept in a cage, especially when that cage prohibits it from flying anywhere. A few of the animals, specifically the red pandas and the macaques, seemed to be enjoying themselves but that is not enough to redeem this zoo. Ultimately, if you are at all concerned about the mental health and overall happiness of animals don't go to this zoo!! I fully support nature reserves and zoos that focus on either very specific species (such as the Bear Farm in Noboribetsu) or on increasing an endangered popular. The Maruyama Zoo has convinced me that this sort of traditional zoo is simply not right.

First of all this is Japan. Do not expect a huge zoo like the one in San Diego. Property are expensive/ sparse and the zoo here is no exception. I was surprised how inexpensive it was for the entree fee. The parking was ample and only cost 700yen. My girls are 7 and 5 and grandma in tow, it was perfect size for us. I am not expecting a safari experience here in Japan in the middle of the City. So I was hoping to see animals that we can't see in the US (Seattle). We really liked the red panda which was very cute and my girls loved it. Love the snow monkeys they are very entertaining to watch as well. There is a 7-11 in the zoo for snacks which is nice and lockers to store your items. The zoo is going through renovations and I believe its going to look great afterwards. I can't wait to come back ti check it out in two years.

Currently a lot of construction work ongoing and also a lot of empty cages. Did enjoy the polar bears!

I was appalled and almost embarrassed to have paid money to a zoo that had painted concrete waist deep pools for their seals to swim in. BUT they are doing some fantastic remodeling so you can only hope your money spent there means something better in the future for the animals.

They have the tiniest cages, and the worst conditions. Especially coming from Australia and knowing how our native animals are supposed to live, seeing Kangaroos in cages was truly upsetting. We also saw big animals such as lions, gorillas, bears, and hippos pacing their cage - as if they were extremely agitated. The ONLY good thing was that we saw different animals that wed'd never seen before (bears and wolves) BUT would still not recommend this zoo to anyone.

We thought it would be quite nice to see the animals in the snow. It is not a large zoo and the cost was only ¥600 However it is very run down and the poor animals have terrible cages very very small and very poor facilities. They only have room to pace in a very small area and looked very agitated. It is a zoo you would expect to see in a 3rd world country not Japan.Would definitly not recommend this as an attraction in Sapporo.

Not a veyr big zoo, but big enough for us to walk through the thick snow. The timber woods wolves are beautiful, the children zoo is fun with goose and squirrels running around. the sheeps are too shy to run away from us.Some rainforest/tropical animals are miserable as they are kept indoors due to the cold temperaturesGreat to meet polar bears enjoying winter in minus degree!

Very small zoo. Although small, there r many details the the zoo has thought about to keep kids interested. Very beautiful grounds and friendly staff. We took the Maruyama Zoo train (only operates on weekends and holidays/ summer vacation) which was a wonderful experience for the kids.
