Comparable to some of the great cemeteries of the world, such as those of Paris, Milano, Genova, Buenos Aires, etc.

There is a lot to see in this cemetery. The Necropolis Cristobal Colón is a sprawling area, centered around a church modeled after the Duomo in Florence. There are many graves here with political and cultural importance – two highlights are the extravagant graves of the eight medicine students killed by the Spanish army, and firefighters who died in a 19th century fire. There are a lot of fantastic, elaborate mausoleums, and many of the tombs are completely run down, with broken glass and lost (or stolen?) materials. Most importantly, visit the grave of La Milagrosa. The grave contains the body of a young mother and her son, who both died in childbirth. They were buried in the same tomb, with the baby placed at the mother's feet. The legend goes that the bodies were exhumed (why? I have no idea) and both were intact, and the baby had found his way into his mother's arms – this inspired the marble statue of mother and child that now stands over the tomb. Anyway, La Milagrosa's grave is always decorated with beautiful flowers and small plaques; expecting mothers will visit her tomb to ask for a safe pregnancy and a healthy child. If you're lucky, you will get to see a woman leaving her offering at the tomb. You are supposed to knock on the tomb three times to ensure La Milagrosa will hear you, say your prayers, and leave a gift. The plaques are from grateful parents whose prayers were answered, and you can read their messages of thanks.Movie buffs: The grave of film director Tomás Alea is here, and is marked on a map you can purchase at the shop near the entrance. The map is expensive (5CUC I think?) but I thought it was worth it – and it's a unique souvenir!

This place is huge- over 140 acres in size. Not a major attraction in my book but still interesting. I disliked the admission charge of $5.00 per person (cuc). I almost felt this was negotiable by the gatekeeper. Do others pay less?

We had a wonderful guide who walked us through the Cemetery. Beauty abounds! Many famousCuban buried here. Interesting to watch the processions of Cubans having there funeral services here. They pull up in station wagons with coffins and taxis follow with mourners. Small funerals, but a stady procession. One crypt has the lore of health and good luck if touched in the right manner and sequence. Worth an hour to walk around.

If one has not been to the huge cemetery in Buenos Aires this is the next best one to explore. It is most helpful to have a guide because it is difficult to know exactly where to go to see the most extravagant and historically interesting tombs. The excess of marble, glass, and statuaryis quite something to experience....but if a visitor is interested in history or even gossip about some of the grave sites a guide is a must.

This is worth a walk around checking out the different burial places for older Cubans. The one specifically for lost "firefighters" is a highlight of the cemetery.

Very large and important Cemetery. Has 56 Acres and 53,560 plots and over 2 million people buried there. 99% of the above ground “coffin” like structures are made of marble with 3 inch thick marble tops. The tops are lifted and the body is placed inside for 3 years then the bones are transferred into a small marble box and then placed into a smaller “coffin beside the large one. These plots are owned by one family and when all the generations are buried and none are left the plot is closed and remains forever. Very interesting to visit. A security guard will be happy to show you around for a few CUC’s. He will tell and show you important and famous gravesites. They are all very nice and friendly people. Worth the visit

The cemetery is an oasis of beautiful architecture. We were with a group with an interesting guide who pointed out a few monuments and the history of some of family plots, but overall it was worth a walk in the park with very nice examples of miniature architecture, religious and political symbols carved from marble.
