Amazingly beautiful place to visit. Although it was mid January the weather was about 24 degrees with a breeze, how lucky we were. Biggest regret was we fixing allow enough time.

Stayed at Lake Mungo in September 2014. Basic bush camping with toilets and solar lighting but a really nice spot. For a city person this feels pretty close to how I imagine the outback feels. An easy drive from Swan Hill to Mungo (about 3 hours). You need to book to see Lake Mungo in details but it is worth it, the tours led by local people is very informative and not to be missed.

Lake Mungo is a great place to visit, with over 40,000 years of history to explore. Don't miss the various walks around the visitor centre, and take time to examine the displays and A/V info. The highlight is the 70km circuit around the lake, taking in the range of natural features and plant communities. Take your time and stop at each of the features, particularly Vigars well, where you can explore the sand dunes and the lunette, a most interesting experience. We stayed at the Lake Mungo Lodge, which I have reviewed separately. This place is truly a wonderful experience.

Lake Mungo is dry lake and a place of historical (archeological) significance (arising from its wetter times), in a semi-desert environment with a relative abundance of wildlife and nice well marked interpretive walks/drives.Access is about a 1 hour drive along a reasonably good road (unsealed for most of the way) from Mildura or a similar driving time from Balranald. Access to the park and the 70km long circuit track in the park is easily accessible by 2WD (but take care of emus/kangaroos on or unexpectedly crossing the road at night/near dusk/dawn). There are two campgrounds in the park along with the shearers residences or the Mungo Lodge just outside the park.It really requires a couple of days here to explore the several walking tracks and circuit drive. Late afternoon is usually reserved for looking at/photographing the sand/limestone formations on the lunettes by the western shoreline. Since 2011 these are now only able to be accessed by boardwalks - presumably to minimize erosion and stop people trampling over archeological relics. Access to the larger sand dunes is from Vigars Well on the circuit driving track. The well itself attracts wildlife in the early AM - late PM that come for a drink.

Lake Mungo contains evidence of continued occupation for the last 45,000 years and is perhaps one of the most significant sites in the world for this reason. Granted World Heritage Listing, it's a place every Australian should visit!Though the DNA of Lake Mungo Man and Women do not match each other or any human alive today … scientist are still discovering it's secrets and it's relationship to where we are today! You can either camp or visit Mungo Lodge
