This wasn't a priority for us on our "Footsteps of Paul" trip, but our guide explained the historical and religious significance of Saint Demetrios to the Greek people. We were glad to see the church and crypt, although seeing people kissing the crypt was a little creepy...

Whether spiritual or not, the Agios Demetrios church is a landmark not to miss when in Thessaloniki. The basilica dates back to the 4th century and one can still admire some of the original black marble columns from the Byzantine period, as well as some of the frescoes that have survived the Ottoman destruction. The Crypt offers a beautiful incursion to the first years of Christianity in Thessaloniki and the garden is a little patch of quiet. For the religious travelers, it is an unique opportunity to recollect by the holy remains of St. Demetrius and of St. Anisia. I warmly recommend to visit the church, for those who love a trip back to history.

The ambience of Agios Demetrios and the breath and span of the interior are trully magical. A strong recommendation even for the persons, like myself, who are not church goers.

It made me think of what Hagia Sofia could be if it was still a functioning church. It is a shame it hasn't been better restored.

We were excited to visit the church because it's after my husband's patron saint buy we were underwhelmed. Its a pretty church but underwhelming.

This church was built on the site of an ancient temple which is quite common in Greece. For me the thing worth seeing were the columns from the ancient temple which are used as part of the church decoration but that's it. For Christians it might be interesting to see the remains of St. Dimitrios which are kept inside the church

The crypt was very nice. It is only open from 8:30 to 2 (I think). Definitely something to do in the morning hours if you want to see the crypt.

The church dedicated to the patron Saint of Thessaloniki. Great church, emotionally connected with every Thesalonian, believer or skeptic. Ag. Demetrius Cara (= the head of a Holy person) is kept in a crypte in the church. A must visit when in Thessaloniki. Many people come to Thessaloniki just to visit the church.

Ag. Dimitrios - is probably most worshiped church in the city, due the saint Dimitrios is a savior of the Thessaloniki. The church is located at the site of St. Dimitrios' martyrdom and contains his relics. The basilica is also one of the largest in Greece.

The biggest church in Thessaloniki and the patron saint. The crypt is at the roman level and is very very nice. You will need at least 30 min.for your visit

It has almost the place of the "Acropolis" of Thessaloniki (togehter with the other xity's landmark, the White Tower). Taking into consideration that Saint Dimitrios is the Protector Saint of the city, you have to visit it in order to feel a little bit of the Byzantine past. Must see, must spent time to feel..

The church is a perfect Byzantine church. It is impressive and a must see sight. Skip the other churches in town, this is the one to see. The interior is spectacular, you will not be disappointed.

Definitely worth a visit. This is not your palacious church/museum type - this is a living church built on a ton of history. Make sure you head to the church basement....the layers of history will amaze you.
