This is a reconstruction and museum. Much of it in German. Tells about the history of the synagogue. Would have liked more English translation. No fee.

I went for a quick walk around the Alte Synagogue. It was close to my hotel. It looks like the shul is currently active. I did not go in. I left Friday morning, but would have liked to go to services on Friday night.

The Synagogue's building defied the Nazis because of its stone structure. Today it has been reconstructed into a Jewish Heritage site. Given how much was spent on the Berlin memorial, a piece of that money could have turned this memorial into an institute about the German Jewish heritage. This would have been really valuable but instead its a shadow of its true potential. A great shame for such a noble survivor of the Nazis. The police presence is a reminder that there are still problems with anti-Semitism.

Its very large, nice architecture, restored after the war. I think it was the largest Synagogue north of the Alps. Worth seeing for the building and indeed the contents. The interpretation is all in German. I am not sure exactly the opening hours. However just go up the steps and try the door.

well renovated. The fact that there is no furniture downstairs and hardly anybody living in the environment makes it a chilling experience.Moved by the fact that the few original mosaic stones that survived Kristallnacht were recently returned by an Australian emigre and put on display.

But closed when I was there. Good information on the outside, but would have liked to see more. Not sure when it was accessible, but seemed to be a functional synagogue, so that is to be expected.
