At the Haidplatz you can enjoy the sight of buildings and structures, going back to medieval times. When I visited in December a Christmas Market was held, which focus was art and culture. I can write long or short about the buildings at the Haidplatz, but better is to look at the pictures. The heritage buildings were of course in use by modern day businesses, as a Thai restaurant or Café Goldenes Kreutz, but all the establishments had left the original structure and appearance of the buildings intact. This in contrast, what Bill Bryson describes about heritage buildings in England (in particular Oxford) in his book "Notes from a small island", that the ground floors of those buildings were gutted and replaced by aluminium frames and plate glass. Not in Regensburg. Magnificent.

Explore the inner courtyards, notice the original doors & locks of the historic buildings! The City Scales building currently being restored is worth entering to see the entry mural & internal doors which depict weighing scales. Before being names City Scales in 1441 it was known as New Scale &, as so many of the huge buildings in Haidplatz, was a patrician home.Today it one of the city state buildings & further out in front of it is the sculpture of a woman with scales & walled with flowers. The former Inn, The Golden Cross is castle like in appearance, once serving as headquarters to high ranking diplomats, princes, kings & emperors. Walk through to the internal courtyard & be greeted by a patch of grass & a series of apartments with balcony gardens. The Arch is Gothic in structure with a massive front defining Haidplatz by its overwhelming appearance. Check out this entry door & enter the internal courtyard to see the columns & arch.Fashion & elegance is the impression that the Thon-Dittmar-Palais brings to Haidplatz. Another amazing door & lock. The 4 wings of this building enclose an intimate courtyard used for open air events. The building now is home to the Department of Culture, City Library, Adult Education Centre & a Theatre.A very impressive & memorable time here.

If you're touring the town, the is a good place to hang out and watch the world go by. Often there are street musicians playing (but beware the Roma pickpocket). It's also a good spot to find an ATM since there are several banks in the area.

The first night we visited the square there was an accordeon singer, singing French songs. Was interesting eating at an Italian restaurant (Da Tino), listing to an accordeon player singing French songs, in a German city. Truly an enjoyable place to visit.

If you are in Regensburg during summer, you can catch one of the good events at Haidpatz. There are coffee places, Pizza Restaurant or Döner place. Square has a good architectural exhibition to see.

There are many fascinating facts about HaidPlatz:First, haid means meadow or field and it's original purpose was a place for vender's and tradesmen to conduct business outside the city wall - sort of like a flea market. The beautiful statue in the middle represents Justice. It was never a well.Next to the window facing HaidPlatz of the Wittl Music Store there is a small carved mouse which visitors touch for good luck and that they may return to Regensburg. In the same building, a meeting took place in 1544 which decided that Regensburg would become a Protestant city.If you are facing the mouse, the building to the left was a residence for two wealthy families (a duplex). There is a huge courtyard where concerts and performances are held during the warm weather. Walking into this courtyard separates you from all the noise and hussle-bustle of the platz.Next to this building is the Goldener Kreuze restaurant and hotel. In the 1500's an emperor stayed here (as they all did when visiting). As a result of a dalliance with a maiden who worked there, she bore the emperor a son. This son was sent to Spain where he became a great military leader and helped defeat the Moors. His statue is located through the archway at the Altes Rathaus.Legend has it that a large black knight from Hungary came to HaidPlatz (before it was a platz) and declared he would be the ruler of Regensburg unless someone had the courage to fight and kill him. A man of moderate stature and strength was in the Altes Rathaus dungeon for basically bad-mouthing the government. He knew he would die soon so he had nothing to lose. Thus he volunteered to fight the knight. Well, as expected, the knight over-powered the man and just as the knight was executing his death thrust to the man, the man had a vision and saw a Golden Cross (Goldener Kreuze) in the sky. He immediately found the strength to rebound and he slew the black knight. He was made a hero of the city.I hope by sharing these stories about just one platz that you will know that a platz is not just a platz,

Of all the 'Plaetze' in Rgbg, this is my favourite. Surrounded by varying styles of old architecture and generally traffic-free, it is a haven of Italian and other eateries, with a discreet and luxurious hotel at one end. The classical music shop at the top corner is a delight to look into during the daytime. It hosts several outdoor cafes and themed markets at different times of the year. Vibrant, but also relaxing.

Plenty of choice for restaurants, cafes, bars. Beautifully lit at night, definitely a place to hang out in the evening with a cold beer.

It's a nice triangle-shaped square in Old Town with lots of restaurants, bars and cafés. Full of life.

I was very surprised by Regensburg and can highly recommend the city for a weekend jolly. The city is spotlessly clean and even though our hotl was in the middle of the city the noise was minimum. The locals were very friendly and even though we tried to speak German, most insisted on speaking English to practice! Lovely place, will go back.
