renovated last year, back to it's old and modern glory, the Staatsgalerie is a must for art fans and architecture fans. I try to visit every time i'm in Stuttgart...

A good number of paintings by Paul Klee, Picasso and old Dutch, Italian and German masters. Even two paintings by Munch...

The Stuttgart State Gallery has a wonderful selection of art from all categories. Try to take a guided tour to really enjoy the Gallery - this is at least what I did, not being an expert in art. Actually the building itself is already art.

I'd been looking forward to visiting 'Oskar Schlemmer - visions of a new world' for months, and it has met my expectations to a very large extent. This was my first visit to the State Gallery, and I too was sometimes frustrated by the fact that you need to walk back when rooms dead-end. Scarier, to wobbly me, was negotiating the top of the stairs to the first floor. Luckily, there is an elevator next to the -extremely pleasant - restaurant. The Schlemmer exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in Bauhaus. Schlemmer taught various classes there and the exhibition gives an interesting insight in how the various disciplines interconnected. At least as interesting, though, was the period following his being 'entartetet'. I was slightly disappointed that relatively little room was given to the extensive Schlemmer archive that the State Gallery administers. Also, I didn't understand why the Bauhaus Treppe was not hung among the studies and sketches for that painting. Upstairs, you can watch, among other things, a video of the Triadic Ballet, which I was happy enough to visit. You can also watch it online at http://www.tanzfonds.de/de/projekte/videoaufzeichnung. Further info on what you can expect at the exhinition can be found on http://www.oskarschlemmer-stuttgart.de/en/exhibition/oskar-schlemmer---visions-of-a-new-world/ The exhibition is on till April 6 2015. If you intend to visit, please mind that the museum is closed on Mondays. And unfortunately, so are most other museums in German cities.

currently, there is a Oskar Schlemmer Retrospective, and i saw it today and can full heartedly recommend the visit. It deals and explains nicely how a Bauhaus Professor developed the style he stood for later. The collection boasts the best number of Schlemmer pictures, but one important one, the Treppe, was loaned bvy Moma, thankyou for that, New York!

John Stirling built a great location for stuttgarts number one art gallery - impressionist like monet, renoir and pissaro are found as same as expressionist like munch, picasso and miro - they also have a great modern art part - good for a nice stop to sip some art

As mentioned in the previous reviews, the building is not perfect for an art museum as sometimes you come to a dead end and have to walk back all the way to the next room. So my advise, wear comfy shoes. The gallery is huge and if you want to visit all parts who have to allocate around 4 hours or so, but the good news is that you can pop in and out with the same ticket during the day. As for the art collection, we were pleasantly surprised by finding a huge collection of Picasso's works and some famous pieces of art which we didn't even know that were kept there. The titles and explanations come in English which means you don't have to take an audio guide. The staff was nice with us and helped with indications as the map was a bit confusing. Another important note- there isn't enough sitting area in the rooms so grab a folding chair if you like observing painting (Chairs are available in front of deposit boxes).

This is an interesting art gallery, with a broad range of art from Old Masters through Impressionism to Picassos and modern art. The collection is of a good size but not so big so that it is overwhelming, so it's possible to see everything in one day. However the way the gallery is designed is a little strange for a major art gallery - I found the bright green and pink colours on the floors and walls a little too quirky personally. Restaurant was however fantastic with an amazing vegetable risotto and the best sweetcorn soup I've ever tasted, and at a reasonable price for central Stuttgart. Staff very friendly. Interesting bookshop in the main atrium of the gallery! Very good overall and recommendable!

Ok, the exhibition and the map they gave us were very confusing. We just gave up the logic and wandered around. Great collection, nice premises and a must for all modern/contemporary art fans out there.

If you are interested in architecture the Staatsgalerie is a must. And there is lots more...When we visited the museum we were told that a part of the museum was closed due to rebuilding/maintanance.I think we paid 8 euro for one adult, one adult student and two teenagers and that was a bargain. We spent four hours in the museum stunned by the quality, we especially liked the modern art even with local German painters introduced to us for the first time and they truly deserved their place at the museum, after that we spent an hour with the dutch painters and... at the end we rushed through some rooms just to see it and we couldn´t believe a part of the museum was closed. You can pay extra for the guest exhibition. If you never been here save the money and spend the hours in the permanent section.I was impressed when I left the museum, both by the building and the exhibition. This is Stuttgart, not Berlin, Paris, Moscow or similar. The restaurant. Overprized, food without love and content, service with bad attitude, tourists equals to money and they wouldn´t mind to rip you off. Two weeks in Germany and I´m sorry to say that the restauarant inside the Staatsgalerie was without question our baddest experience.

When traveling I always take time to visit the cities galleries. This one did not impress me. The layout of the museum is very confusing, even if you have a colored map to direct you. Some of the exhibitions were closed and you are not informed about it when you buy your ticket. The staff is constantly worried about people standing to close to the art displays and hover over you to make sure you obey. I have never experienced such rude staff in an art museum before, it just made me feel uncomfortable and unable to enjoy the art.

you'll find all the classical artists but not many from each. pleasant and nice displays. parking directly underneath helps. did find the staff extaordinarily helpful and serious about their own art displays

The Staatsgalerie has a wonderful collection of post-modern, contemporary and medieval art. The building itself is a amazing piece of art. It's well worth a visit.

I loved visiting the museum, the collection is mixed well, and I was able to see a wide range of art & styles. One staff member was rude to me- be sure to drop your back pack in a locker before using the washroom apparently trying otherwise was a big faux-pas.
