A beautiful example of the Lombard-Romanesque style, this church has its best features inside. Not because its facade was left unfinished; au contraire it must have been stunning in its days of glory. but the bas- and high-relief carvings which adorned the front were made out of local arenaria (sandstone?); a soft stone which is easy to carve, but offers little resistance to weather and pollution. So there is little left to admire outside (beside the lines of the architecture).Examples of what it must have been are inside, in the capitals of the crypt which are adorned with monsters and bishops and fools and all kind of strange figures.Very quiet, cool, ideal stop during an afternoon walk through the cityI give only 3 stars because I do not believe that everything can be 'above average', and compared to other historical churches (San Teodoro, San Pietro) in Pavia this one provided less 'oomph', but what a beautiful average this is !

Time stands still in such an old church. Well worth a visit, Charlemagne was crowned in this church.

Loved the sandstone façade of this important Romanesque Basilica, one of the largest and most important in Northern Italy. Unfortunately, due to the passage of time, the sandstone is starting to show signs of decay but I suppose its more than 900 years old.Unfortunately Mass was in progress when we visited but our visit was still well worthwhile. In history this church was first mentioned in 642 A.D. and it was the Royal Chapel of the Lombard Kings until 1152. The Kings of Italy were crowned in this Basilica - most notable being Frederick Barbarossa in 1155.This is the best historical architectural jewel In Pavia and is more visually impressive than The Duomo.

Having walked around the Pavia streets checking out church after church I would say that this is by far the most interesting. Having been disappointed by one after another the Romanesque carving and the chapel beneath the altar were attractive features of this interesting church. It is unfortunate that the sandstone has worn so badly on the west front but, if you are in Pavia, this is well worth an hour of your time.

I think this church astonished me, is so different from everything I've seen. For me was the best in Pavia, and there are other great places to visit in this city.

assolutamente da vedere; è un piccolo gioello dell'arte romanica; da non dimenticare le piccole vie chela circondano , arrivare anche lungo le rive del Ticino e gustare un'ottima cioccolata con panna alla gelateria Cesare di corso garibaldi

chiesa antichissima costruita in arenaria, veramente molto interessante. la cosa che colpisce di più forse sono i capitelli, ognuno diverso dall'altro, con raffigurazioni di ogni genere (dai santi ai mostri come allegorie dei peccati)

Edificato tra il X e l'XI secolo, S. Michele e' il classico esempio di stile romanico. In tutta la sua imponenza e ricchezza, anche internamente appare arricchito di affreschi e sculture di pregevole fattura. Esternamente la facciata, in ardesia, e' rovinata dal tempo. Da preservare a tutti i costi!

La basilica di San Michele rappresenta il prototipo delle numerose chiese medievali che può vantare Pavia, le più famose delle quali sono San Pietro e San Teodoro ed è un capolavoro dell'arte romanico lombarda. San Michele si discosta dalle altre chiese cittadine per l'utilizzo , sia per quanto riguarda la struttura che le decorazioni, della pietra arenaria, di color ocra, in luogo del cotto. Vale sicuramente una visita sia per le decorazioni esterne, sia per l'atmosfera interna, caratterizzata dall'altare sopraelevato. Un bellissimo sito la illustra: sanmichele.it

Si tratta di uno stupendo esempio di chiesa in stile romanico-lombardo risalente ai secoli XI e XII, edificata ai tempi dei Longobardi e distrutta da un incendio nel 1004. L'edificio odierno fu portato a termine nel 1153. La chiesa custodisce le tracce di celebrazioni e incoronazioni di re e imperatori tra cui quella di Enrico II il Santo della dinastia degli Ottoni ( re d'Italia nel 1004) e di Federico I Barbarossa ( imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero nel 1155)
