Between the carso this is a valley where a lot of hiking and climbing paths are available. During autumn people go to see the fall colors.

although at sea level, Val Rosandra is the most incredible "mountain" climbing environment. You can find any possible kind of rock, crags, multi pitch climbs. Well, it's the place where Comici started to climb, what more can you say?

We stayed in the area for a week and really loved it. Nice green mountains, a surprising waterfall, trekking in mountains between Italy and Slovenia was really beautiful. We lived in the village Bagnoli della Rosandra and did several treks from this place. We liked short trek from Bagnoli to Bottazzi, where you can see a nice waterfall, and on the way back you can enjoy panoramic views on Trieste and the sea. We also did two treks to Slovenian villages Beka and Mihele. In Mihele we tried local slovenian food at local agriturismo. Good area for someone who likes trekking, biking and running.

Val Rosandra, or Dolina Glinscice, as it's called in Slovene, is right on the Italian/Slovene border. A fantastic limestone gorge right on the edge of Trieste's industrial sprawl, thankfully just out of sight. For Brits, think Cheddar Gorge without the road and all that tourist tat. There is an easy, well maintained path from the ethnicly Slovene village of Boljunec (Bagnoli della Rosandra), past a viewpoint for the waterfall, to the tiny hamlet of Botac (Bottazzo), where there is a part-time cafe - usually open on weekends, but not as good as it used to be, when it was owned by locals. From Botac you can carry on into Slovenia, through the forest to Beka.I will let you into a secret. If you want a closer look at the waterfall, there is another path. It follows the river, mostly, with divertions up the side of the rock face. Easy to loose the path and not for the faint hearted, but amazing. And all the while you can see the wooses up on the main path, while they look down thinking 'How the hell did they get down there?'P.S. keep an eye out for the mountain goats. You will never belive what they are capable of, nonchalantly climbing the sheer rock face to nibble a tiny speck of green.

Even if the first part of the valley was destroyed by an unregulated tree cutting operation, the further inside the walking will go the better; suggested is "Locanda da Mario" at Draga S.Elia a must for every daypacker hiking in Val Rosandra. Either for a quick stop or for a full meal it is worth a visit.

Val Rosandra is like Trieste: rugged, rough, but full of history, love and a bit of nostalgia for a past that was better than the present.Val Rosandra is where locals with a passion for hiking would go on a Sunday; it is however, in spite of a moderate height, full of tricky places, and dangerous spots. Every summer, unfortunately, there are news of someone getting hurt in a fall in this area or even worse, dead. Around the valley (Val is short for VALLE, valley in Italian) there are a few "Paesini" (very small towns), where the best attraction can easily result to be the local Trattoria with the homemade local red wine Terrano, the Prosciutto San Daniele and the cheeses. Many locals will come in this area during the hot summer days, looking for a little breeze.

Val Rosandra is the Mountain spot in Trieste; if you look for some free climbing, trekking or cycling this is the spot for you.Rock climbing started there in the '30 and hasn't stopped since.Nice peaceful place.

Sadly, many of the trees in the lower part of the valey have been cut down and people who knew the valley before cry outrage, but for those like me who are seeing it for the first time it is still a very beautiful place. Wild goats climb on the hill side, and the falls at the head of the valley are spectacular. There are a number of paths, all well signposted, and the going is not too arduous. There are many pools that afford great bathing places and picnic sites, and for the athletic, the scree slopes and rock faces offer exciting climing opportunities (but experience is needed).
