Don't expect any paintings from Matisse. This is dominated by drawings mostly, a few sculptures, some historical photos. It is relatively quite there so we can enjoy what is there easily. On a Sunday afternoon, the town is barely awake. None the less, the staff is friendly and welcoming. Getting there is easy and parking is abundant.

A fascinating mix of works, not just of Matisse, but by several other artists of the period. The perfect way to follow our Sunday lunch in the Brasserie de l'Abbaye in Le Cateau, and on the first Sunday of each month, admission is free. A pleasant little park at the rear made for a very relaxing afternoon.

An easy drive from Lille or Lens-- add this to your Northern France art tour. We went to the Louvre Lens in the morning (reserve ahead to eat lunch there), went to this lovely museum for 2 hours in the afternoon, and stayed in Avesnes at Les Mout'anes) that night. It was kind of a perfect day. This is a small collection, but excellently displayed. There are some really unusual early and late Matisse paintings here. There are also some great exhibitions of his contemporary French modernists.

So interesting to see the works of Matisse close up. He was from the area, and his paintings and name are well known. Last time we were there there was an exhibition of the letters of Wilfred Owen, the WW1 war poet, who was killed on the last days of the war in 1918, crossing the River Sambre just up the road. This Museum is always on the list of places to see in this area.

You will find this excellent little museum in the quiet little town of le Cateau in Northern France. It's well sign posted from the autoroutes and includes displays of Matisse's works which you can learn about with a useful audio guide in English as well as other languages. The museum is well laid out, located in the centre of the town and the staff are really helpful and spoke excellent English. There are usually other displays to enjoy of other local and or well known artists. If your off the beaten track in Northern France it's well worth a visit.

Very well laid out and excellent value for money, especially if you are over 60.Not so sure about a special exhibition for the granddaughter of Matisse who seems to specialise in kites.

Situated half way up the high street in Le Cateau, behind iron railings, a very imposing house which is the Henri Matisse Museum. A lot to see within the Museum - it is also an educational facility - can be noisy. There are also seperate exhibitions by other artists as well. Some of the exhibits are quite spectacular. In August there was also an exhibition by Matisse's grandaughter Jackie. It was a bit different to say the least.I was slightly dissapointed to find that most of the finest works of Matisse are not housed in this Museum. And a lot were sold and went to the US.At the back of the Museum is a beautiful garden that you can walk around - complete with a lake and fountain. I am not sure whether this is actually a Public Park, but it was lovely nonetheless.

Lovely modern museum well worth a visit. Le Cateau is charmingly old fashioned. Reminded me of the France I remembered from my youth!

We happened across this excellent gallery/museum on our way to Belgium. It's in the town Matisse was born in and housed in a grand maison. Paintings, drawings, sculpture, gouaches, and his famous paper collages are presented in superb minimalist surroundings. Works by artists who were contemporaries of Matisse - Miro, Picasso, Rouault, Giacommetti, Chagall and others are also displayed. It's a fine collection, well worth the effort of seeking it out. Wheelchair friendly and a free audio guide with your admission.

In an area that is rather short on museums, this was a highlight. Allow a couple of hours to give the museum its full value
