My husband and I were in Dublin for a few days and looking for a way to get out of the city without renting a car. I came across the town of Howth on trip advisor and were able to easily get there on the DART. The hike on Howth Head was beautiful and there are different trails depending on how much time you have. The town itself was very picturesque and we stopped at Abbey Tavern for lunch Would love to visit again in the future!

For many visitors to Ireland, the thought of having to rent a car and playing Russian Roulette on one of our many roundabouts seems both daunting and perhaps unfathomable. This may lead to uncomfortable bus tours and wasted nights worrying about 5 A.M. wake-up calls just to catch a train. Forget it. Howth has many of Ireland's greatest traits yet can be reached by public transport in just 25 minutes from Dublin city centre. Howth village is both quaint and modern at the same time, in that it boasts all the luxuries one would hope for on a city break yet holds all the charm of "old Ireland". Narrow winding streets and old stone pubs guide you up the hill to Howth summit where your hike begins (or pre-hydrate with a lovely pint of porter in the Summit Inn) . Stunning vistas across Dublin Bay could awaken the most weary traveller from their jet-lag. Walk along cliff edges covered in beautiful yellow gorse and smell the heather and bracken that surround you. Follow the many trails atop Howth head at your own pace and decide where you will quench your thirst afterwards in one of the numerous pubs nestled among the seafood restaurants in this beautiful fishing village. A must see on any trip to Dublin!

Our group rented a bus to get out of Dublin for a day. Howth was a great highlight. We enjoyed the countryside and then had lunch on the pier. If you want to venture out not far from Dublin, this is a great spot.

Arrived by train and walked to the marina just in time to see the fisherman come in with the catch of the day. Following the boats were the seals looking for a handout! While there took a beautiful boat ride around the island. After a lovely pint and an awesome bowl of seafood chowder at a local eatery we were ready for the cliff walk. The hike is not a casual stroll, nor is it for those afraid of heights! It has the most breathtaking scenic views! We we sorry that we got such a late start and could not go as far as we wanted! We now need to go back!!:)

So very refreshing from the hustle and bustle of Dublin! A wonderful afternoon spent enjoying the fresh air, bracing wind and beautiful views! Wonderful cafes, bars and restaurants! The Dart took only 30 minutes, so no traffic jams....a real bonus!

We took DART train from Dublin to Sutton and then walk along the cost to Baily Lighthouse and Howth. Beautiful nature sceneries. Must see! Video from trip you can find here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5k4Q7y2in0&feature=youtu.be

The most beautiful scenic walk I've head so far.The path is long but nice and the wind can be strong but at the end when you approach the lighthouse it's totally worth it. And it's also quite high if you dare to look over the edge.If you're into walks and are near Dublin definitely check this one.

One of the best walks in Ireland. Serene beautiful and with a view that will take your breath away. Despite the busy location of Howth village just minutes away. Howth head feels like it's removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. Absolutely beautiful. Try time your walk so as that you arrive on the head at sun set. To watch the sun go down over the bay...you can also extend your walk by starting at the little known 'red rock' in sutton. The Martello tower at the end of strand road is a good starting point to walk all the way around the head and cliffs.

I love this place from my youth. You can walk from Sutton cross right around the peninsula (10km).If you take the burrow beach up to the harbour and then around balscadden and over the hill of howth you can steer clear of traffic. You walk along the cliffs and are exposed to the elements and amazing views (bring your camera). You pass a number of lighthouses all very scenic. When you are at the summit you have an amazing panoramic view of Dublin bay and on your descent again you are spoilt by the scenery. It is one hard hike for sure but always well worth it.

Take the train for an hour an head off to the beautiful coast. Take a walk and enjoy the sea looking towards the lighthouse. Enjoy fish soup at one of the many nice restaurants. Get some wind in your hair!

The taxi driver from the airport named this as the first thing we should check out on our first trip to Dublin. We went the next day and walked around this fantastic fishing village with fish markets, shops, pubs, working fishing boats, seals in the harbor and beautiful views. We loved it so much we went back on our last day, which was my birthday. Took the cab right up to the summit, had a pint, and walked along the cliffs--WOW! Then we walked down a long scenic path to the main part of the village for lunch and another pint. Plan to spend the day!

Howth is conveniently located 30 mins by DART from Pearse station, Dublin. We went there to see the seagulls, stores selling seafood and fishes and even managed to meet a few otters swimming at the pier. Snapped some photos there and had an excellent special fish and chips lunch for Euro 10.00 at the restaurant situated at Howth DART station. There is more to explore in Howth but we were pressed for time and headed back to Dublin.

Highly recommend the "Bog of Frogs" (follow the purple markers) trail. The scenery is amazing...and the trail is good exercise, but not too strenuous. When we got off the DART we had to ask a few people how to find the trail head in that it wasn't very obvious. A very helpful woman in the King Sitric hotel gave us a trail map which was really helpful. The trail was well signed...except at the point where you come to the road...and there's absolutely no visible sign posts. We asked some locals who were out walking their dogs and they told us to turn left UP the road and we'd find the trail in a few minutes. Gotta say, that wasn't obvious at all....but all part of a fun day out in nature.
