We live right on the trail and enjoy running or grabbing a bike and riding it anytime of the year. Currently 26 miles in length and soon to connect with the Keller Trail which will take you to downtown Peoria and link up to the East Peoria trails.

The Rock Island Trail offers various gravel parking lots to utilize the tree lined gravel trail. This is the first rail to trail transition and it's still heavily used by local enthusiasts. They also keep expanding the trail as more sections that get converted for public use.

The Rock Island Trail is a wonderful trail that starts near Peoria, Illinois and goes for 26 miles. Bring water, and some cash to make stops in the local towns the trail goes through. Great Experience. Restrooms at local parks and convenience stores.

It is sad that this trail is under the maintenance of IDNR, there is a jewel in the rough, everything a trail should be, except an asphalt surface. This trail becomes more suitable for mountain bike status the farther west you ride. The surface lacks depth to hold up but would be good enough to use for a base under 4 inches of asphalt, come on IDNR SPEND THE MONEY to make this a first class trail.

Great packed crushed limestone level pathways--base is the old railway. Tree covering for shade. Bridge across Kickapoo Creek near Dunlap. Good ice cream & cafe & tea room in Dunlap!

I entered the trail in Alta. I have both ridden my bike and walked this trail. The trail is nicely graveled and wide. There are some hills, but not too many. I always felt safe on the trail. In recent years a new subdivision has gone up near Alta so instead of a more nature view, you can see some really nice houses.

Beginners will enjoy the short trips between towns. Distance cyclists will like actually being able to go places, at speed, without concern for crossing motor vehicles. The scenary in places is awesome.

The Rock Island Trail has recently been expanded well into the city of Peoria and extends NE to Toulon. Most areas of this trail are well kept, but after a rain, bike tend to leave ruts in the trail where gravel is a bit thin. But the flora and fauna along the trail make up for any issues with the trail. Watch for a few ruts and chipmunk holes, and your ride or walk will be very enjoyable! I personally would recommend stopping in Dunlap or Princeville for lunch or dinner - nothing in Wyoming, and what's there is closed frequently. Nice picturesque train station in Wyoming, though.

We chose to walk it, but next time we will ride bike. As a former railroad, the trail is flat and straight, cutting through farmland and woods. There are some "scenic overlook" spots that make for nice photos, and a secluded picnic area along the way as well.
