We loved Fredericksburg when we visited in the fall of last year. We promised ourselves another visit and we had a chance the first weekend this March. The weather just broke from cold winter temps to a beautiful spring-like weekend. We were dismayed though because we were in Old Town for 48 hours - walking everywhere and were PANHANDLED 6 seperate times in the early morning, afternoon and after dark after dinner. It was VERY disconcerting and at night and felt unsafe. Also, there were people hanging around the Visitors Center on Caroline all the time and that also made us feel uncomfortable.

This is a great place to spend an afternoon. You can wander down the main drag. Have tea or coffee from a small shop while you browse the antique stores. Stop for Thai food or hamburgers for lunch. Come back on a weekend night and have a drink and listen to music at a bar. Or come during one of the festive times when the old town is packed and enjoy the people.

Fredericksburg is billed as "America's Most Historic City" and for good reason. This is a beautiful city with a very active downtown area and many historic old buildings and sites from pre-Revolution and Civil War times. A wonderful place for school-age children to really experience history and make it come alive. Ride the trolley or a horse-drawn carriage for a guided tour. A short trip out of town will take you to several Civil War battlefields. Many great places to eat, lots of antique and specialty shops. If you just can't get away from modern times, there are shopping centers with all the big name stores out from the central city area. If you can't find something of interest here, I'm afraid you're hopeless! But I live here and I may be prejudiced.

Old Town Fredericksburg is a lovely place to visit for tourists and locals alike. The Trolley Tour offers a good overview of the area, with their knowledgeable and friendly guides. The historic sites are not to be missed such as Rising Sun Tavern, Kenmore Plantation, the Apothecary Shoppe and more. Guides in period clothing complete the picture welcoming each into their domains. Downtown shopping is also a treat with shops like Ulman's, Goolrick's Drug Store (great lunch counter! and most reasonable!) Irish Eyes, Colonial Cupcake, Eileen's Bakery, Picker's Supply, and a wide variety of antique shops and other restaurants. There are carriage tours one can take to see some other historic sites on the surrounding streets as well as Caroline. Go one street over to Sophia and follow it downriver to the City Dock. It is a great place to watch the Rappahannock, watch wildlife and see ospreys and eagles fish in the Spring. There are two new fishing docks on the east end and two boat ramps in between. The Spirit of Fredericksburg (out of Reedville) docks there in the late spring and summer and offers lunch and dinner sailings. Whether window shopping or heading there for a meal, Old Town Fredericksburg offers something for everyone in your party. Fredericksburg is your history as one of the oldest cities in America. Take time to enjoy it, even if you live here.

We enjoy strolling through the old town area of Fredericksburg. The variety of shops is great, and their are all kinds of food options.

We lived in the Fredericksburg area for 30 years and moved to NE. In December 2014 we visited Fredericksburg for old memories. This is a town that is full of history. The quaint streets, old homes, taverns and museums that you never will forget. If you like antiques, Caroline and Princess Anne streets have many to see. For the history buff, Fredericksburg is surrounded by 4 major civil war battlefields - - Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania, and the Wilderness. You can easily spend several days here taking tours in town, and self guided trips through the surrounding battlefields. Be sure to visit the visitor center for maps as the town as the town is surrounded by a lot of urban growth. However in the historical areas, you can get "lost in history"

Very nice experience, even in the cold. There are many quaint shops. Any easy walk to restaurants and tourist spots.

One of my favorite things to do it to walk around old town Fredericksburg, relax with a cup of coffee (Hyperion or Griffin Book Store), have lunch, many place but watch the hours, they close between lunch and dinner. Many antique stores, two or three book stores. Nice college campus (if you can time it, try a play, the drama department is excellent!). Many offerings for music. Keep an eye on the parking. On street parking is only two hours which can fly by. So try the off-street lots, a big one is on Sophia Street next to the river.

Quiet town with lots of historic places to see. Do NOT trust the websites if a holiday. If the Battlefield Museum is closed, so will most stores in town. However, we enjoyed seeing the town and historic buildings despite almost every place being closed. Would recommend to others.

Old Town Steak & Seafood is a bit off the beaten track in Fredericksburg, but well worth locating it. Once you visit you will never forget it's location. The food is excellent with a extensive wine cellar for pairing. The service is exceptional. A great place for any special occasion or if you just want to have an exceptional dinner. Dress should be business casual or above to fit in with the cliental.

took the trolley ride and got an overview, then walked around. Good choice. Lots of character in this town. plenty to see depending on what interests you. Went to the Monroe museum.

I think that this little town could fairly easily reinvent itself to be something very special - but it isn't there yet.

This is a choice place if You like stake, or prime rib. The place is very large, often they try to seat You in the little bar part on the left, it is OK if You like cozy, but if You prefer, airy cathedral ceiling, lots of room between tables, and an elegant athmosphere, ask to be seated in the main room on the right. The menu is extensive and the service is great. I ordered prime rib rare, the waiter asks which size large or medium, medium, the food arrives. it is hanging off the plate. I say I hate to ask, but how big is the large size? Waiter says. I have been working here for ten years nobody ever finished the large size. Off course You can always take the leftovers home, and what is unique in Virginia, Your unfinfished bottle of wine.Highly recommended!

Historic Fredericksburg is a wonderful town for U.S. History lovers and for those who like to take a trip back in time. The town has so many battlefields well-marked with explanations of their importance in the Civil War. It was home to Mary Ball Washington, George Washington's wife. Her gravesite is there. The Mary Washington College campus is another attraction. There's no shortage of places to eat a good meal. The Keystone Coffee Auto Spa and Restaurant has good food, great gourmet coffees, and it's unique.

Our first stop was the visitors center where we were greeted with open arms....The staff was polite, friendly and knowledgeable...they provided all necessary information we needed...they also directed us to a short movie....after we left there we looked around the area and was a little disappointed with the main street...I guess we expected more historical stores and things of that nature....even some of the restaurants weren't what we expected....we did try a restaurant which we thoroughly enjoyed...we also thought that some of the attractions were perfect....even though we were a little disappointed, we would definitely go back.
