One of the most awesome nature experiences! It was a while ago when I visited the lake - we actually went up that trail in the winter when it was covered in snow and ice. Even then there were quite a few people attempting it - some were in sneaker-heels!! Basically, if there's a will, there's a way, even in winter. I will warn you about the top of the trail though - the steepest, scariest and iciest part is 30 metres before the lake. There are hand railings beside the stairs there so hold on tight!!! In Summer, I hear from the locals that it is humming with hikers, but still beautiful! If you want a good idea of the trail, see this link: http://life-gazing-and-wildstrawberries.blogspot.com/2015/01/hanging-lake.htmlOne last thing: please don't climb onto the lip of the waterfall (people do it), this is a natural wonder, and it is made of delicate minerals that can be easily disturbed.

This is great for a bonding experience with your family and friends. Although it says it's only a mile in length, most of this is uphill so it WILL take you a few hours to complete. I wouldn't say the lake is worth viewing, but the views from the top definitely are!

Really fun trail makes for a great hike. It's not very long (1.2 miles maybe?) but it's almost straight up. The trail is basically a switchback that winds its way up the side of a canyon, crossing back and forth across a stream along the way. It's a really pleasant hiking experience, as you're accompanied by the sound of rushing water and many small waterfalls along the way.The trail has a few flat sections but there are several long stretches of what almost feels like a staircase, you step along sections of granite boulders as you walk up. It definitely gets the heart pounding, and I would imagine it might be challenging for somebody who's knees weren't 100%, but overall it's not that difficult (some people were even running it for exercise). One tip, several of the rocks have been smoothed out by contact over the years, so they can be slippery. I would recommend a pair of hiking boots or footwear with a decent grip. When you get to the top the lake is really pretty - it feels almost tropical. But, there are many signs indicating you should not come in contact with the water - so, no swimming or cooling off your feet allowed. There's a secondary trail off to the left when you get to the lake that will take you up to the top of the falls - it wasn't that clearly marked, so I'm unclear if it was officially sanctioned. In terms of getting there, it should be noted the trail is not in Glenwood Springs itself. You need to get on the freeway and travel North 4-5 miles - there is actually an exit off the freeway called Hanging Lake rest area. Once you exit the freeway you'll enter a parking area - the trail starts at the North end of the parking lot after you walk on a paved section of pathway. Nice views of the canyon itself as you walk towards the trailhead.Overall, a really fun hike.

rockie and steep. The top has a railed stair case that will take your breath away...the very top is the lake and chipie- he prefers kind bars without chocolate please... greet him by the entrance behind the falls-- he eats right out of your hands~ fun stuff

The hike to Hanging Lake is well worth it. I was overwhelmed by its beauty when I was there for the first time in August 2007. It is a hidden gem that anyone visiting nearby should absolutely take the time to see.

The hike from the parking lot to the trailhead seems long, but then you start to go UP and UP and UP. Pace yourself, it's steep almost the entire way, so take it easy. Stop and look at the flowers in the summer. Watch out for dogs and little kids racing headlong down the hill (I remember doing that but not anymore). Don't drink the water - in spite of the rules and signs at least some of those people (and dogs, etc.) have been in the water. Enjoy the lake - you'll never see anything like it. Try to ignore the rude people who yell, scream and wade in the water. Don't be them. This is a place that is being loved to death, sadly. Early morning for fewer people on the trail, good shoes (please! carrying you out is a real pain and the canyon is too narrow for helicopters), keep your dogs and kids under control. Going down is harder on your body than you think it will be. Walking sticks help. Above all, don't miss this place and do your best not to hurt it.

One of the wonderful spots in this great state! A short but strenuous hike up to this marvel! It is a very popular spot, so we went in Spring before the summer rush was on.

This is a heavily traveled hike, but we did our research and went earlier in the day. There were still many people on the trail, but it didn't bother us. It actually helped us feel like we weren't the most out of shape people out there! We spent some time taking selfies once we reached the lake. Take the few extra steps to see the spouting rock.

Last time I did this trail I couldn't believe all the hikers out there. Straight off the tourist buses. People in club clothes and acting like idiots. Sadly, there was a lot of trash up by the lakes as well.

Complete the hike to spouting rock and go early (7am) to avoid crowds. Strenuous in parts but so worth it. Very beautiful and about a mile long. If you can climb three flights of stairs you can do this hike.

This is an easy and gorgeous short hike. There is a stream along the path which makes the hike very enjoyable. We went in October. The colors of the vegetation were changing and it was very delightful to contemplate the lake. Super recommended.

If you're in the area, this is an absolutely can't miss hike. It's a short hike, but the other reviewers are correct in that this is not an easy hike. I took my family along, and my mom came down with a case of vertigo during the last part of the hike, where you're climbing steep steps along a cliff. Anyone that's in reasonable shape, this hike is no problem at all. Do wear hiking boots if you have them, it's a rocky and sometimes slippery trail. We went in the summer and it snowed on us in the middle of the climb. The lake itself is one of the most stunning views I've ever seen. Crystal clear, bright blues and greens, with a few seating areas for you to admire the beauty of it all. It's impossible to take a bad picture here. The one downside is that it can be pretty busy with other hikers, and some of the other visitors are unfortunately not so respectful about protecting this lovely space. Then you're left with the option of either turning a blind eye, or interfering. :-/

I hiked with my boyfriend up to Hanging Lake in the beginning of February. The trail was steep and icy, very difficult to walk up in some places. I'd recommend taking some snacks and water in a small backpack and wearing some boots or shoes with good grips. The hike up to the trail was steep, but having a walking stick made it easier. It's a good 2 mile or so hike, and towards the top is where the hike becomes the most challenging. When we got up to the lake, it was like finding a beautiful, hidden gemstone at the top of the mountains! Clear water and natural waterfalls cascading into the lake made it a serene place to relax. The hike back down was icy but fun, because we slid on our butts down the steeper paths like a giant slide. It was enjoyable seeing the lake in the winter, and I'd love to go back each season to see it.

This little hike is a requirement for anyone spending any time in the area. Bring good shoes and some water, take some time out of your day and just walk. It is a nice hike that is relatively easy if you take your time, walk at your own pace, while stopping occasionally to admire the view. Do not give up, get to the top. It is well worth the effort.
