We had read a lot about this zoo, especially its natural-looking habitats and how close you can get to the animals. All that is very true, it's great. But two tips: March after the big snows wasn't a great time to visit, as so many animals were wintering somewhere we couldn't view. Go when the weather's good, although I'm sure the crowds turn up then too. Secondly, enter through the main entrance, not the one nearest the MTA station. It's convenient to do so if you've taken the train, but the entrance is dreary beyond belief and you have to walk through no-man's-land to get to the circuit of animals. Worth the subway trip into the awful Bronx to see this lovely zoo with exceptional old buildings.

I can't believe you can visit this zoo for free! Amazing. It's very easy to find and about 30 mins from midtown. Very impressed with the animals they have here, I really wasn't expecting there to be so many and it was so much larger than I imagined too. I'm not sure if it was because it was winter or because it was a Wednesday but the small shops and food huts were closed. Only the main cafe and zoo store were open. The food is quite expensive (approx $15 a meal), I'd suggest picking something up at the supermarket near the subway station as you can take food in with you. Some animals were inside due to the cold temperatures, so I'd probably recommend going in summer but it was still enjoyable and I saw more than I expected. Also, make sure you wear suitable footwear, my shoes got very muddy even on a dry day. My favourite experience was the World of Birds. Note that some experiences require an additional $5 fee. I expect I will definitely return in the summer and take a camel ride!

This zoo was gigantic developed much like a Disney park. This is one place everyone must visit, close to public transportation and great value for your money since this helps natural wild life. I will surely visit again, only down side to this place it closes too early. Please open later.

We have been members of the Bronx zoo for a couple of years....our family of 6 can go in for a whole year for about the price of going in twice. That being said, we have gone multiple times and seen different things each time. Lots of walking, but with the year pass you can take the shuttle for Free!

This took a while to get to on the subway from midtown, but gosh was it worth it! We visited on a Wednesday where it's free entry. There is a $5 fee to see Jungleworld which is SO worth it, so make sure you get those tickets! All the animals have a beautiful enclosure and all seem well looked after and nourished. The highlight of our visit was most definitely Jungleworld - their homes there look like you've stepped right into the Amazon Jungle. Just an incredibly real feel to it, complete with the high enclosures and waterfalls.Something we had never seen before was the Polar Bear, amongst other animals. The day was very enjoyable, except it was plainly obvious the zoo would be so much better during the summer. A lot of animals were indoors due to the cold weather and snow outside. This included some of the more stunning animals, such as lions. It's a good thing to see however, that the animals welfare is what is at the zoo's interest and not the tourists.

The journey to the zoo is long way from mid town but so nice none the less. The subway stop and walk to the zoo is an eye opener especially if your trip was mostly in Manhattan. Great grounds and well laid grounds. It was the dead of winter so most animals were inside but the ones out were really nice. The brown bears and seals are really active and fun !! The poor gorilla looked like they need a fire to warm up. A must visit and I would imagine that in the summer it would be amazing .

I lived in NYC a long time ago, grew up in northern Bronx at a time when a trip to anywhere else in the Bronx would have required armed guards. So it was with a bit of trepidation that my wife, son and I climbed aboard the D train from mid-town to head up to the zoo. The ride is a bit long, about 45 minutes, but it appears to be shorter than taking the BxM11. On the way back the bus stopped right in front of the zoo gate, so we took the bus back into Manhattan.Once you're past the gate, it really is a different world. Even though there was snow on the ground and the weather was quite chilly, we really enjoyed all of the indoor exhibits. The layouts for the housings for each of the animals were well thought out and very well maintained. The Lizard House and the World of Birds were standouts. We also enjoyed the fact that the zoo was free on Wednesday and there were no crowds at all. I imagine the vibe would be very different if this place was more crowded. In any case, it was not crowded while we were there. All in all the trip was a highlight of our entire week in chilly NYC. Well worth the trip.

I love my annual visits to the Bronx Zoo despite the time consuming commute. Once arrived at the gate, you will enter into the "wild" by strolling nature's path, exploring a lush forest and its animals. I find the settings beautiful and as natural as possible. There are little water falls along the way, small bridges to cross, hills to climb, camels to ride or even taking a ride above the zoo wihich allows for a great view. It will take you many hours to explore everything the zoo has to offer, so bring time and food (overpriced at zoo cafe etc.) and comfortable walking shoes. If you are a nature lover, you will enjoy your visit!

I loved the zoo. Wide variety of animals. Make sure you use your walking shoes . I would recommend you go for your visit in summer because in winter, lots of exhibits are closed.
