The entire lower town is under the control of the National Park Service, You can tour the shops, where either seasoned interpreters will telll you all about them or visit a few which have plaques standing by. Scenic beauty, two rivers converge at the point, you can see three states from the town, it's a great place.

There are hikes, Park ranger tours throughout the town, the cathedral is apparently haunted and gives ghost tour . But the view from the Maryland side overlooking Harpers Ferry town the two rivers and the railway is one of the most beautiful sights I've seen. The town is a interesting from civil war history to the wide variety of small town American foods from colonial days to present. Don't forget to drink home made apple cider made from apples right in front of you.

Beautiful. If you enjoy history and like to see it with you own eyes this will do it. It all has a very Victorian feel to it

Not the typically expansive outdoor hiking national park but richer than most other with history. Take time to spend in the old town as well as to ride the shuttle bus. We actually did this all in our personal vehicle in the middle of winter. Little traffic and easy to get around.

I visited Harpers Ferry as a side trip from my stay in DC in 2009. The place looks very similar to how it looked 150 years ago. Among the places to visit are the church on top of the hill, Jefferson's Rock, and the Federal Arsenal, where John Brown led his failed slave revolt in October 1859.

Quaint historically significant little town. One may walk around enjoying the historically accurate restored buildings of the Civil War Era or shop in the artisan owned stores. There are plenty of walking and biking trails for the visitor wanting to spend the day outside. We had lunch at the Town's Inn and was served homemade food with a big smile.

What a beautiful historic delight. The town at the bottom of a steep hill, and meeting of two rivers is worth the stop. Take yourself back to the beginning of the Civil War and submerse is the history of this quaint town. Perfect for old and young alike, though there is a bit of walking required.

It's a great place for spending couple of hours. You can find it out picturesque. Park your car at visitor center, outside the town, & take a shuttle or just park near train station inside the town if you can find a spot. I was there on Saturday & did not pay any fee for entrance.Walked around for 3 hours. The history & nature of town is amazing, specially the view of Jefferson Rock & St. Peter's church. Don't forget walking on train's bridge with a cup of hot beverage at a cold weather.

Beautiful, wonderful and wild, West “by God, smile when you say it”, Virginia! The first thing you notice is the fresh, clean air! There is an abundance of wild life in "them thar hills"! I thoroughly enjoyed walking around this very historical area. The people are friendly and full of wonderful stories of the life of the residents back in the day. There is a small museum which shows films of the old days. We visited in the summer and went from one small store front to the other. Walking through the park and the trails were enlightening. Visited a building which had hash marks on it to record the level of water when the Potomac swelled and flooded the town, not once but twice. This was very sad, but showed the devastation Mother Nature wrought on the townsfolk. If you want a truly unique adventure and are visiting during the week, the MARC train runs from Union Station in Washington, DC to the Harper's Ferry Station! Can't imagine anything finer! If you drove up, continue on to Charles Town for another delightful experience. There are many more historical places to go. It boosts small unique shops and eateries. Check for events taking place in Charles Town, they have quite a few parades throughout the year. Wonderful! Of course, it you like playing slots, horse racing or table games, you can find them all at the Charles Town Races and Slots (Hollywood Casino). There is also a fairly new Charles Town Inn (hotel) overlooking the race track. All of this for free!! Note: Except the casino and hotel, of course. For those who love vintage cars and motorcycles, they have Car Shows, right on the main street, E. Washington Street, the heart of town.

parking a challenge...you'll get a ticket, don't panic, it's your park entrance fee. Walk up to Jefferson Rock...supposed site where John Denver came up with song Country Roads. Go a little further up to the cemetery and old church.

Have been here a couple of times. The park has a wide variety of activities ranging from seeing historical sights such as John Brown's Raid features, Jefferson Rock, as well as beautiful trails. On busy days, you must park at the NPS lot, but when not busy, you can park down by the train station in town and cut out a lot of transit time. Absolutely lovely place!

We were on a road trip to visit family in the area and passed the sign for this park right before Christmas. I decided to stop on the cold, rainy and foggy day. We knew little about the park, but had a couple of free hours and I was curious. I have a national park pass so we did not pay the $10 entrance fee per person. I probably would not have paid the fee due to the bad weather otherwise. There is a shuttle bus that takes you to the town from the visitor's center off route 340, according to the bus operator it was a 6 minute ride. We only spent about 2 hours in the town itself due to the poor weather and no visibility, and we were really not prepared for the weather, my daughter was very cold. I will definitely return in better weather as the short visit certainly peaked my interest. We did enjoy the small museums in the town and had an early lunch in the business area of town, but unfortunately many of the shops and pubs were closed when we were there right before the holidays. As we will go that way again in the future, this is a park that I will definitely return to in better weather.

We had a wonderful day hiking on trails, and ending up in lower town. Great to see the ruins of old homes and businesses. Will definitely be back.
