This 300 year old Cathedral was restored before the 1998 visit of Pope John Paul II. This church was dedicated to Our Lady of Candelaria, the patron saint of the city. Its top is crowned with the statue of Christ. A chapel was built on its site in 1530.And do not forget the climb up the winding stairs to the church tower for just 1 CUC, the view of the city is amazing!

They charge you to go up to the top of the bell tower. The view is worth every centavo. The church is well worth the visit. Very well preserved, very well loved church. You can see the working clockwork and is interesting as well.

Catedral de Senora de la Candelaria (1756) on the same site, where a chapel was first build in 1530 (destroyed by fire in 1616). This church is situated on the beautiful Plaza Ignacio Agramonte/ Calle Cisneros, in the center of the historical town. To visit the city and not climb the church tower, would be a major omission. The views from the tower are quite spectacular and would help a visitor to better orient them selves in the city.Secret tip: Do not hit your head on the low entry in the tower. You will be warned, before your ascent.Still, I did hit my head!-----------------------------1 CUC donation is the current charge to visit the tower.

belle cathédrale , dans cette ville aux 9 églises .. très beau chemin de croix , préchoir en bois magnifiquement sculpté… statues vêtues de vrais vêtements et perruquées !
