We reviewed the map and planned to stroll around downtown looking at the sculpture, but having difficulty finding a parking spot for our truck, changed the stroll to a drive. Fortunately being a Saturday, the traffic was moving slowly so we got a good view of the sculptures, but no photosA stroll would have been better, but regardless we enjoyed the alternate plan for a drive. We will return one day for a closer look and photographs.

The over 50 excellent tree sculptures along many of Orangeville’s streets add additional interest to the already picturesque downtown area. They can be readily viewed by car or by walking, the latter providing the opportunity for closer inspection and appreciation. My first visit to Orangeville this spring was mostly cold and raw limiting most of my views from a car and not allowing much of an opportunity to enjoy a walk for closer inspection but I look forward to the opportunity during a future visit.

You may walk or drive the tour of tree carvings. Many of them show a part of Orangeville's history such as the carving in front of Lord Dufferin Centre on First Street which was the location of the Hospital.

Visiting relatives in Orangeville, we were looking low-key to do. We saw a flyer advertising the tree sculptures, got a map at the Town Hall, and walked around downtown, seeing about half the sculptures. It was very enjoyable.

When in Orangeville this is a great way to spend a day. Instead of chopping old trees down and removing the stump, this is a great alternative. The trees are turned into art that will last for some time to come. Numerous carvers have taken part in adding to the collection and there is a wide variety to view. It may be necessary to jump in the car and drive to an area then get out and walk around to view the sculptures, as they are spread out over a large area. There are several private sculptures in the outlying area if you know the area.

I did this tour with a bus group and it was very interesting especially when we entered the cemetery and found 3 more sculptures there - these ones were some of the nicest on the entire tour (I assume because they are not as accessible). There is a very interesting story that goes along with each tree and it gives you a better sense of the history of Orangeville. I would recommend doing this tour which you can do on your own by car. There is a map with information about all the sculptures.

It's interesting that the trees along the streetside that are deemed by the city arbourist to be "dead" are then carved by an artist. If this is of interest to you, then you can do a drive down the main downtown street and see a good selection of the carvings in 10 minutes or less. We did find the main street stores to be interesting and cute.Being we are from British Columbia, we have see outstanding tree carvings in our province. Those in Orangeville are appreciated but do not compare to those in BC. Its an interesting driveby.
