We visited the Montreal Goldfield on their Open Day recently. In the 1880s, for three years, there was a thriving gold mining village operating. Now the site is in bushland but there are still many remnants of mining activity so that you get a really good feel for what the place would have been like. Volunteer guides, mostly retired local people, will take you around and explain the history and technology of the site. It's a great way to spend and hour or so - cheap too so that a whole family could go. I think entry is by donation. If you're down at beautiful Wallaga Lake go and have a look - I think it's open most days from 2 o'clock.

This has to be the BEST value for money attraction my husband & I have ever been to. We have done a lot of traveling in Australia & overseas & we are very interested in the history of our country, so visiting Montreal Goldfields at Bermagui was a highlight, even though it is only 1&1/4 hrs long, our guide, Bill kept us enthralled with his knowledge of the area. We found our time here was well worth the visit and at the time we visited it was only $5.00 per person, I would recommend this place to everyone who appreciates history, the bush, volunteers, and a very pleasant relaxing informative time. Check out the activities organized for 11th October 2014, just wish that we could be there.

For $5 not a bad tour. Informative but not overly interesting. Perhaps needs some more stories, demos, handling equip, dummy camp site, something to help take you back and appreciate it a little more.

The Guide kept informing the tour that all the written history in the center was wrong and kept telling her child hood memories from her Father ( who died in 1940) and her primary schol days as fact.Went on and on for ever.Different Guide might have been a good tour.Cheap at $5

This is a great historical community project well worth a visit. Great educational thing to do with the kids.

Montreal Goldfield is a unique experience being one of only two goldfields in Australia to have Alluvial gold, being gold from the sea!The history is told by your guide who is an experienced and knowledgable person and who makes a visit to this historical attraction all the more interesting. Run totally by volunteers, one can get a tour every day at 2pm. Learn about the dangers of mining the gold in the 1860's and wonder at the site of the most beautiful tree ferns and trees that have grown on the site over the years.The old rebuilt stamper machine for crushing the rocks dug from the tunnels is very impressive!We tried as hard as we could to find a sample of this precious metal but, sadly, we did not find any!Well worth a visit and most interesting for all ages.

Great bit of NSW history, guide knew his subject, it was casual no rush and excellent value for money.
