Hire snorkel equipment from town and just swim across the bay and snorkel around the island. Don't bother paying for a tour to go onto the island, it's just a boring rock and all the good stuff is underwater. You don't need a guide if you're not going on the land. That being said... It does get cold, there are some currents depending on where you go and the tide, so be a confident swimmer. We saw a little bit of everything, it was a great adventure.

We visited Las Tintoreras as part of a day trip to Isabella island from Santa Cruz. The day trip was good but if you're limited on time&trying to choose which day trips to do I would recommend maybe San Cristobal instead & Bartolome. I would recommend instead to spend maybe 2 nights at least on Isabella island instead of going on a day trip (if you have time) as the best things to see on Isabella can't be seen on the day trips from Santa Cruz... For example Los Tunnels is meant to be amazing and one of the best places to snorkel (sea horses!) but you can't get here on the Day trips from Santa Cruz as it just takes too long.Unfortunately we didn't have the time to spend extra nights on Isabella which was why we decided on this day trip&we also found it difficult to get decent information on which day trips to choose/ which were best. It cost $110 for this one and we booked with Los Viagres de Darwin travel agency which was one street back off the front street on the water near the harbour in Puerto Ayora. It took quite a while to get to Isabella from Santa Cruz- just over 2 hours I'd say. I'm not good with boats so I think we hit it lucky with the sea as I didn't feel sick although there was quite the swell in the waves. Firstly we had to pay $5 entrance to the island (they love the sneaky charges in the Galapagos!). Next we saw sea lions and marine iguanas just right off the pier all around the place. It's a beautiful little bay with the most beautifully clear water and a nice little beach too. The sea lions were everywhere! Next we got in a bus and went to the turtle reserve centre where we saw lots of giant turtles, baby ones, slightly older ones etc. Then we got in the bus and went to see flamingos. Then we went to a place where lunch was provided- I had chicken and rice. It was fine, nothing to write home about but I ate it. Fish soup was also provided and water. Afterwards we got some fruit in a bowl. Next it was back to the boat where we slowly made our way only a short distance to Los Tintereros. We saw blue footed boobies on the rocks, lots of penguins on the rocks too (15 maybe), some penguins swimming near the little beach, sea lions, a huge manta ray in the water. We got out of the boat and walked around a very barren, extremely harsh landscape. It was interesting to see and there were lots of marine iguanas nesting here. We saw some reef sharks in the water here too. It was so hot so as usual with the Galapagos you'll need plenty of sunscreen and water. Then next was the snorkelling which I was really disappointed with. We didn't see anything really... Barely any fish even... Maybe 5 or 6 I'd say. The water was so rough too and tidal. We were just being brought in and out with the tide/ waves and there was nothing you could do about it. The water was quite deep too and it was difficult to see anything. This was the worst snorkelling we did by far. Other reviews seem to say it was ok which I'm surprised by as it was really not good at all. I don't know if our guide maybe brought us to a particularly bad spot or what but it was disappointing. We saw so much more at the port area, we would have been better off just swimming off the little beach there I thought. Anyways after the snorkelling it was back to the boat and then transfer to the bigger boat to head back to Santa Cruz again. Would I recommend a day trip to Isabella from Santa Cruz? No. Do Bartolome (beautiful views, great snorkelling turtle, penguins&loads of fish), San Cristobal (didn't go but apparently excellent) or North Seymour (again didn't go but heard good reports). I think Isabella is a fantastic island but much of what we saw could be seen on Santa Cruz anyways so really you'd be better off with a few nights on Isabella to see the more interesting parts and if you don't have the few nights to spend then don't bother with the day trip as one of the other ones would be a better option.

On the first afternoon of our first day in Isabela, my friend and I signed up for a joint tour (through our hotel - Iguana Crossing) of Las Tintoreras. We ended up with just one other couple and a very sweet female guide. It was a great afternoon. We were brought to the port and then taxied around the port area looking for local wildlife - just in the first 5 minutes on the boat we saw penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, sting rays, brown pelicans and blue footed boobies. Amazing! Our first of the 2 stops was to an area where marine iguanas nest and breed. The boat dropped us off at the dock of a rocky island where a sea lion was basking on a bench and then off we went for our walk through a strange moon-scape-like terrain to see the marine iguanas. They were EVERYWHERE! Big, small, young, old - just all over the place. It was wonderful to be able to be so close to them in their natural habitat. You walk along a well-marked path (though there is no shade so be sure to cover up or wear a lot of SPF) that lasts perhaps 1km. Then toward the end you are near an inlet that acts like a tidal pool in which we saw sharks, baby sea lions (actually swimming together), sea turtles and frigates flying overhead. A tremendous experience.Back to the boat which then taxis to a nearby area where you can go snorkeling around the coast of another small island. We saw two smallish sea turtles, plenty of colorful fish and sea plant life as well as penguins on the shore. For a 3 hour total tour, it was well worth it. Highly recommended and close to town so you aren't spending all day getting to/from on a boat.

At Tintoreras in January, we saw penguins (including some babies), boobies, marine iguanas, pelicans, and a sea turtle (when snorkeling). On our tour, which I think is the standard "half-day" tour ($45?), we spent a lot of time walking around one of the islands with no shade. It's a neat landscape, but you've pretty much seen all you want to see after about 10 minutes. We were there for closer to an hour. The 30 minutes of snorkeling was pretty good, but it's not so much better than what you can find near the pier. If the tour included snorkeling for 30 minutes in two areas or something, then I'd do it. Otherwise, save your money for Tuneles, which was awesome and decent value for $80 in my view.

Definitely worth the trip to Las Tintoreras. We were a little spoiled because we went to Kicker Rock first. However, we saw more sea turtles here than anywhere else and were able to get super close to them. Water was very clear which gave us the opportunity to sea rays, sea lions, lots of fish and other creatures I cannot name. Definitely reccomend!

You go on a harbor cruise to see penguins, sea lions, blue-footed boobies and sea iguanas. You go snorkeling from the boat. You walk amongst some really weird lava formations. It is a fine way to spend a morning.

This is also called the bay tour. You drive around in a boat stopping to the usual spots where the penguins and birds usually are. We saw them every day in the same spots. You land in Tintoreras and the highlights are the number of water iguanas clumped together, and a sea lion colony with a massive male/alpha that shows up sometimes. The snorkeling is not very special -- unless you encounter swimming penguins, marine iguanas and sea lions. In our trip we briefly saw a sea lion up close. The turtles were in their usual spots and the guide knew where to look for them. I felt you could do this tour on your own and if you had limited time in Isabela - you can skip this and do Los Tuneles or even better - Sierra Negra hike.
