This will not take long and is not very expensive, but it is also quite skippable. The information doesn't add much to what you can read elsewhere (and in some cases is not as complete). There are only a handful of artifacts that are really neat to see--including one eye from the moai, and a wooden club (I wish it were displayed so you could see both sides) and a couple of more. Pay attention to the hours (only open in the morning on the weekends and closed Monday).

The museum's charts and informational displays were updated and vastly improved within the past year. They are now among the first things you see and they should not be bypassed. Bilingual, in Spanish and perfect yet colloquial English, the displays tell the story of Rapa Nui and its people. The latest scientific evidence is presented clearly and concisely. Unproven theories, myths and legends that help tell the story are included and labeled for what they are.The museum does not have a great number of artifacts in its newly-rearranged permanent display, and many of them are reproductions of items removed from the island and now housed in museums elsewhere in the world. The star attraction here is the only moai eye ever discovered. Unfortunately, the dry, limited descriptions accompanying the artifacts were not updated or rewritten when the displays were rearranged and a few of the descriptions no longer match what is seen.

This museum gives a comprehensive explanation of the discovery and history of Easter Island. The layout is well designed and adequate for a two hour visit. There is also a library on the premises if you want to do more research.

We went to this museum before we did anything else as it was a great place to get background information on the island and the culture. We whizzed around in about 25 mins but was worth it. Lots of the information is guess work but interesting nine the less. Cheap quick trip and shouldn't be missed.

A good addition to any guided tour you take or a place to help you understand what was happening on the island. The history is so unique and tragic that you need a reference point.

After travelling around island I recommend a visit. Very nice posters tells the story of the islands, the people and their culture, both related to the statues and also to what follows the bird man tradition.

Definitely very interesting for a bit more in-depth information (more than 'and here's yet another toppled or restored statue/platform etc...'). They have the original of the coral eye that you see the replicas of in the postcards of Ahu Anakena.Otherwise, shop around in Hanga Roa for the Grant-Peterkin guide book, which describes the major and minor sites in more detail plus useful tips. I got it for 15k pesos but saw it for 22k in another shop!

Not the biggest museum but very informative. Well done and worth the time to stop in an learn more about the island and the Moais

Try to visit on the beginning of your trip. A lot of information about the culture and the ´misteries´ through informative panels.

To understand the mysteries of the moais and culture, go to this museum. Very informative and also the signs are both in English and Spanish. After going through the museum, go outside past the driveway for a unique angle in taking moai photos.

Thanks to all the reviews that had gone before we pottered down here on our first day. Well worth the walk. We spent about an hour here reading through all of the information, which was in both English and Spanish so must have been updated from an earlier review. Makes all the tours around the island much more interesting as you can ask questions as well having learnt the basics about the island's history already. Plus it's next to one of our favourites sites on the island.

It's is a good start do understand about the island and the moais. They explain how the moais are made and show how the island were created. You have to pay about 1,000 to get in. It's the only thing cheap in the island!

I liked to visit this museum. There's a very interesting map there that shows us something more not only about Easter Island but also about New Zealand and Hawaii. There's a relation among them about the first inhabitants of these islands. But many things concerning Easter Island is still a mystery. For those who like to know a bit more it really pays a visit.

Small museum , easy 15 mn walk from town along the seafront towards Tahai, then turn right inland - The museum is best value for money - charges only adults - 2 US dollars per person and free for students/children. Explanations in English and Spanish. Mostly informative photographic displays and some artefacts but I found most interesting learning about the 'eye' , 'female' Moai and best I got curious about the Rapa Nui rongo rongo 'writing' on tablet. Alfred Metraux's Easter Island book - his chapter XII on the mystery of the tablets was most useful to understand the various hypothesis about them. I love this little museum as I had it all to myself if you can avoid the 'tours' time-table ! Also, a nice little place to go on a rainy day even if you have purchased the 'companion to Easter Island ' guide by James Grant-Peterkin.Access to toilet and library, you need to get out of the building and take the stairs , at the top, signposted there is the library /research centre straight ahead and toilet on the left.Everything seems expensive in the island but this museum is a little gem !
