This beautiful building was not open to the public, as it was going through restoration. It is significantly placed at the head of a major square in Pecs. The history of Hungarian Jews is written elsewhere, even as a new generation of hate-filled extremists tries to rid the country of its dwindled Jewish population. So long as Taliban-styled rewriters of history allow this and other relics of the once large Jewish population to stand, this spot will continue to be a point for introspection. The tourist information office worker was quick to apologise that we could not enter the building and in an apparent effort to 'balance' the situation, told us that the 'mosque' that is, the Pasha Qasim, which is actually a Catholic church, is also closed for renovation.Somewhere in my belly, I got the feeling that touristy sites, rather than the spirit of the people, was uppermost in Pecs city's tourist representative.

The Synagogue is a great piece of architecture inside and out. Definitely get a guide to explain the interesting history behind it. The inscription outside says: The house of prayer for all peoples, meaning people of any religion may visit the Jewish services. While we visited it was being renovated inside so we couldn't go in, definitely will go inside when it's done the next time we visit.

Before the II WW more than 4000 Jewish people lived in Pecs, but after the war only few left. Synagogue is not in use anymore, but it is opened for visitors. These days it is under reconstruction so you can not go inside.

This synagogue had lovely building but could only stand outside the gate and watch. It used for Jewish community to gather from around Pecs.Not much details to be read about it. Door are close

This ancient place of worship has changed religions over the centuries, becoming a mosque - and then becoming a church again. In recent years, the church has given more attention to acknowledging the Muslim part of its history, which makes for an interesting amalgam. We found the woman taking tickets was quite interesting an knowledgable about the place.

I am sorry to inform you that the building in the photo is not the Synagogue, but the Theatre of Pécs, located in the pedestrian zone, called Király street. It has an excellent repertory thetre and hosts the annual festival of Hungarian theatres, held in June. The building, although in need of some refurbishment, is very nice and a typical example of 19th century theatre style, but is not open to the public. Visitors can, however, enjoy the elegant space in front of it and the mediterranean atmosphere of the little cafés and restaurants in the surroundings, especially in the summertime.

It was very interesting to learn about the Pecs' jewish community. The synagogue is beautiful. The man at the entrace is amazing! If you have some time, have a chat with him.

PECSTOUR OF SYNAGOGUE, CATHEDRALS AND MOSQUES, ON THE SAME DAYBy Zoran SlavicI arrived in Pecs from Budapest, traveling the offer even more than I thought because the end of the road must pass through the mountains called the Mecsek. Pecs, city of Hungary, located behind the Osijek in Croatia, and the famous Mohács. This city has in spiritual notes and material remains such a tremendous number of history that is simply inexplicable that the third millennium works like all the other. The city has historically gone through a variety of military, economic, cultural and religious stages but so it's no surprise that I counted 18 religious facilities. At first we found in front of the famous Jewish School of Pécs and the still operational Synagogue Great Romantic style. The small synagogue, is used on weekdays by the members of the small Jewish community Pécs and it is in the school's garden. During a tour of the facilities, which seems at all rationally constructed, without luxuries and excesses, we found out that it was conceived and designed by Frigyes Feszl, Karoly Gerszer and beauty of Kauser. Today in this building, Which was completed back in 1869. standing board with an inscription, which is a Biblical quotation that tells the following: "The house of prayer for all peoples" - this according to people of any religion may visit the Jewish services. The painted geometrical forms, the fruit and floral ornaments form a harmonic unity. The sanctuary is directed towards Jerusalem, its ceiling is covered with stars, and it is divided from the nave by a row of richly ornamented bronze railings. The Ark formulated by four marble columns and a large dome is located in the sanctuary. Above the basin the miniature clocks used to show the order of prayers on Saturdays. Several memorial plaques commemorate the victims if the First World War and the Holocaust.We have some respite, with lunch in the Zsolnay Restaurant. We ate a delicious duck with red cabbage and plum. Dinner was held in a pleasant atmosphere with friendly staff. Of course, the restaurant is decorated with Zsolnay ceramics, which is a trademark Pecz. After the coffee we have continued to this day in Pecs intended visiting religious sites.Put us to the famous Cathedral, with four towers make this city distinctive throughout Europe. We find that the first two of its towers are the 1064th while the reconstruction of the medieval added the other two. At the moment I approached the first mosques, minarets, no one, so I heard - the sound of the organ. However it was only in my mind: I heard them at the Basilica, reminded me of the fact that this city a hundred years ago is one of the most important manufactory to produce the so-called pipe organ. First, we come to the Mosque of Pasha Qasim is one of the symbols of the city of Pécs, because located in the city center, on the main square (Széchenyi square). Today, it functions as a Roman Catholic church and the minaret was demolished in 1766. However, It is still one of the largest Turkish buildings that remains in Hungary. It harbors the characteristics of Turkish architecture.Other Islamic place of worship The mosque established by pasha Yakovali Hassan was built in the second half of the 16th century, Szigeti outside the gate of the town. During renovation, the mosque was refurnished according to its original purposes. This is the only Turkish age mosque in Hungary that Remained intact together with its minaret.After this amount of touring religious sites, rest and relaxation in Tettye Restaurant us, it really felt good.

Many places to enjoy walking. No many time necesary for it.Synagogue is a example the interanting place.

The frescos inside are like none other in all the cities of Hungary. The backwards hebrew clock outside is working.

This is a beautiful building definetly worth visiting. It allows you to see and feel the Jewish life that Pecs had before WWII.

Были проездом, так что получилось недолго. Но не смотря на это могу сказать, что довольно симпатичный городок.

En Pécs encontramos también una costumbre muy peculiar y romántica.En algunas calles hay verjas repletas de candados con el nombre de las parejas que los han dejado.Simbolizan amor eterno, se cierran para no abrirse más. Son los candados de los enamorados.Se denomina JÁNOS PANNONÍUS.Esta costumbre se ha extendido a otros países, yo particularmente lo he visto en gante, Bélgica.
