Do not go to Bergamo without visiting this Duomo! It is a gem. You could spend hours here and see something spectacular at each turn. Very impressive for an under the radar town.

I cannot do justice to the beauty of this place. My words are inadequate. Just visit and see for yourself.... I can now understand why religion means so much to so many people... It would difficult not to moved by this place.

Until I visited this basilica I had never seen so many frescoes at one place as there. If you like religious painting you must see it!

I think this is probably one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. The paintings on the ceilings and walls were incredible... This place is a MUST if you are visiting the old city of Bergamo.

We wish we had more time to see the fabulous interior of this church. After coming from France where many churches are quite austere and plain after the Catholic Reformation, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore Baptistry was full of amazing things to see. We had only 15 minutes before it closed for lunch and we wished that we had had more time. The ceiling was incredible as were the huge tapestries which covered the walls. If we return to Bergamo we will spend the night there and much more time in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore Baptistry

We had a wonderful guided tour from a volunteer. A very elegant german lady who lives in the town. As we were there practicing our italian she did the entire tour in italian! A rare and special experience!

We were actually visiting Bergamo in September 2013 and loved the feel of this city. The new town has wide streets from the train station. It is worth then walking up the narrow cobbled street to the old town and strolling around this part of the city. The church is fantastic - probably the most ornate church we saw during our whole Italian holiday. When we walked into the church our breath was taken away and we didn't know where to look first there was so much to take in. We ate in the nearby piazza and had a fantastic meal at Trattoria Sant'Ambroeus. We strolled to the funicular to the top of the mountain and took a short walk around the road up here stopping for a cool drink and relaxation whilst taking in the views. Also did some great shopping for bags here. as gifts.

It was awesome to see such a beautiful church way up Bergamo alta, all around was a lot to take in, but if you have little time it is still nice to see. It was closed during lunch hour between 1-2:30pm.
