gamla linkoping open-air museum

as it was winter and it was a week day only shops were open and not much activity I guess but had a good look at the old buildings.

Once upon a time some old houses from the centre of Linköping where moved out to "modernize" the city. We are happy to find them just a short bus ride from the centre, at "The old Linköping". There is much more to this place than an outdoor museum! You can check out several designers: wood carvings of first class, ceramics, printing and an antique shop, to mention but a few. There is also a Technological museum or playground where you (and children and teen-agers) can learn a lot. Moreover, a coffee place where you also can have some food. Nice place for everybody who is interested in old fashioned Sweden (with red houses), and who wants some peaceful wanderings and interesting shops.

This is a really nice collection of buildings from, primarily, the 18th and 19th centuries, with many old-style businesses operating (chocolate factory, needle point, carpentry, old-style general store etc.). For Americans the reference would be Colonial Williamsburg but smaller and a LOT less touristy.

Old houses were moved to this special spot in Linköping. Located rather central in the city. It is nice to stroll around and look at old buildings. There is also an outlet for Choclate :-) from Cloetta.

My son and I had a lovely time this summer ( 2014 ) …beautiful gardens, little nice old stores… the Cloetta sweet store, my son called it the chocolate factory

Gamla Open Air Museum in Linkoping Sweden is a historic gold mine. As I understand it, as city of Linkoping began to expand, many of the old buildings in Linkoping's city center were scheduled for demolition. Some of these buildings date to the 1700's. In the mid 1950's efforts were made to relocate these historic buildings and a living museum, ghost town, or historic city was born.There is no admission fee to walk around this historic town, but of course there are things you can buy and food to be eaten. There are many actors/employees who walk around in period dress and reinact scenes from the time of the town. There are many activities for young and old alike.I think I was either tired or just overwhelmed. I think I shut down a bit and walked around in a fog. This place is amazing. I sorta want to go back and do and see more. You could spend a great deal of time here and walk a very long way. My husband walked to a neighboring historic farm/museum and I was too pooped so enjoyed his photos later.There are shops, gardens, historic houses preserved with furnishings and belongings and always someone there to explain things (and yes, they speak English). We went to one building where the history of rope making was displayed and an interactive demonstration of how rope is made was conducted. Four year old "Little Girl" got to take her home-made sample of rope with her.This place really is phenomenal. If you want some local history, you'll find plenty of it here. Based on one review here, it sounds like summer is the best time to go....or at least not the dead of winter.

This part of city is living history, at the same time there are people there who live and have small workshops there. Even one hotell! Educational attractions for children, beautiful gardens around houses. You can enter everywhere. There is also open-air theater and nice shop with different sweets for very good price. Enjoy!

It is a great place to take children. Go to the Cloetta factory for excellent deals. There is very charming grift stores,also.

Provides a vivid insight into the historical architecture of Linköping. The property interiors are brought to life by helpful, knowledgeable staff. Excellent café with outdoor seating and a great range of cakes, together with representations of historic businesses, shops and a bank.

I have been to many open air museums. This one is very authentic and offers a great range of buildings and gardens. No entrance fee. Nice restaurant too.

Very nice as many old house & buildings actually have been moved to Gamla Linköping. Not only an Open-Air museum as people are living here and several small business make their living here.

The place is beautiful with old houses. However since it was winter, most of the shops are extremely quiet with closed doors, and most of them are not opened. The cafe was nice with good coffee and cakes.

We passed a great afternoon ambling amongst the quaint cobblestone streets, popping in and out of the many old fashioned shops, and enjoyed a traditional Swedish lunch at one of the many restaurants there!

I visited on a Saturday when the Christmas market was on. As I did not have a lot of time I mostly perused the stalls and didn't go into any of the museums of which there was a good range. There are several cafes and interesting shops, it would be a great day out combined with for example a bike ride in the nearby woods.

This is an amazing well preserved part of Linkoping where the houses and other buildings make you feel as if you have gone back 100 years in time. As we explored we met several people dressed in the period costume making the whole experience more authentic and enjoyable..
