We went over there yesterday, there's two small shops selling picnic foods etc., but the restaurant/cafe that you approach first when walking off from the local ferry, is very welcoming, very reasonably priced and the food was great. While away a few hours there and walk around the island looking at the houses and seeing the way the locals live is a real experience.Well worth a visit.

There are several islands at Ria Formosa (all with you have three departure ports: Faro - in front of the old fortress - and Olhão - 100 mts from the Fish Market), namely CULATRA, FAROL and DESERTA. On the boat trip to them you can see beautiful landscapes and take lovely photos. This one is a tipical fishermen village, with really nice Restaurants (fresh fish...), supermarket and too much summer houses, some of them to rent...but, overall a nice visit.

If you like walking along an almost deserted beach or if you just want the short ferry ride and then sit in a bar near the ferry until you want to go back to the mainland you will enjoy Culatra

lovely local boat ride in the water bus, filled with locals and low season tourists. Beautiful walk on the island. Go with the locals, no need to spend mega bucks on the tourist tour boats.

Take the regular ferry to this island and visit another world.Charming little houses abound in the villages. They have had a football club on the island since 1974 but only acquired less essential services such as healthcare and sanitation in the 2000's .The people can appear sullen but such are island folk and scratch the surface and you will find warm hearts beating away.Away from the villages and over the wooden boardwalk lies one of the top beaches worldwide. No high rises,no tourist tat,no beach side bars just dunes, miles of beach and the Atlantic ! If such simplicity is your thing this is the place...

This island is just a peace of paradise in earth. You can walk for miles with no one around. Don't forget to take a picnic with you and sun protection.

Beautiful place to visit and get a true insight to how the locals live.A must-see for anyone visiting olhao!

Walk all the way to the other side of the Island when you get off the ferry, follow the footpath. At the end there is an idyllic piece of secluded beach with lovely clear blue sea. The sand is so beautiful and soft it's like walking on talcum powder!

A trip to this small Island is a real must for any visit to Olhao, it's full of fisherman it smells of fish and the fish restaurants serve really fresh dishes.. We go at least twice a year not only for the food but also for the relaxing atmosphere and vista of the mainland..

A little further than Armona Island Culatra is unique as it's an official fishing village with it´s own church and school. The residents are very friendly and ready to help. For those not used to the sun, factor 50+ is a must. Don´t get involved with the locals trying to outdrink them on beer these guys have a reputation :)Another tip is to take a jumper if we stay late as it can become quit cold.

This is one of several islands within a short ferry journey from Olhao. All have sandy beaches and are a haven for sun worshippers all year long. Was there end Oct and it was a glorious sunny day. Sea can be a bit rough but there is normally a life guard stationed there. Fabulous to see that the locals ensure there is no litter left lying around. The boardwalk leading to the beach is well maintained and creates an amazing journey down to the vast beach. Not to be missed!

Small fishing village with a few bars, a board walk to the Atlantic and unspoilt beach that you can walk along to Farol (About 45mins) where you can find a small beach bar that provides bar snacks and beverages at very reasonable prices.
