Hoboken used to be a place to simply get drunk. Obviously you can still get drunk here, but it is a different kind of drunk. About ten years ago Hoboken started moving into more of a mainstream crowd. They built up the water front and put in higher end lounges, which brought in higher class clientale, which allowed higher priced drinks. Bars along Washington Street took notice, and some of the older ones left, allowing "upgrades" to adhere to this new crowd. So now you can get drunk while still being around very beautiful people. You can also easily drop $100 in a night. But back in the day, Hoboken was a place you could get drunk very cheaply. Sure the people didn't look as nice, and the bars were sort of run down, but it had its own charm. The bartenders knew who you were and what you drank. You would see the relative same crowd. I am not saying one is better than the other. But if you want to experience what Hoboken USED to be, go to Moran's. It is midtown, a couple blocks off of Washington. It will not draw the guidos or the women in the high heels. It is not a place outsiders (aka not anyone not living in Hoboken) will go to. But that is part of the charm. It's a place that never has a cover, never has a line to get in. The bar can get packed, but you never have to wait too long for a drink. And when you are done drinking there, when the night is over, you can walk over to 5 star pizza and not have to worry about a long wait for late night eats.
