We went here just for the fact that it's the oldest tavern in the U.S. We had a wonderful experience, with fast service and wonderful food and drink at moderate prices. We were offered a table right next to the fireplace. The entire place is quaintly decorated and quiet jazz music is played.

I had my 45th birthday dinner there and the atmosphere was cozy and romantic. The food was average but everything else made up for it.We were able to tour the tavern and take in the history of the place. The service was fast and courtesy. The lobster was to-die-for!Overall, we would come back simply for the service and atmosphere.

Taking a meal at the White Horse was like taking a step back in time. The ambiance of the oldest tavern in the US didn't let me down. We sat at the bar - often the best place to learn about a place - and the bar tender did not disappoint! We learned a lot about the establishment and the lore of the immediate area. The beers we enjoyed were locals and flavorful and my lobster BLT (and the mussles) were amazingly tasty. The food portions were quite sizable. If you are anywhere near Newport, put this on your list. ...its likely already on any pub-goer bucket list and well worth the trip!

This is the oldest tavern in America and you can feel the history when you walk in the door. We sat in the bar and had drinks. It was fun and amazing to be there. The specialty drinks were great. Ask to see the picture of the ghost.

We stopped by for a late lunch in the garden this past Saturday. We had my small Sheltie mix with us, so we asked permission for him to join us at the outdoor table. The hostess sensibly confirmed that he would not be disruptive, and once reassured, was very friendly. Our waiter brought my dog water and a treat unbidden. What a friendly place! We ordered cocktails, which were all delicious (mine was the faultless Margarita, but there's some more unusual options too). I had lobster bisque (great) and the chicken which came with an awesome ratatoullie/gnocchi side dish. Will definitely return. The inside, which I just has a peek at, is tremendously atmospheric. I'd like to go back when I'm dog-free for a pint at the cozy bar. Note: I'm not positive that they always allow dogs, so call and confirm before you go. Mine is very small and was quiet throughout meal.

While strolling around Newport on sort of a do-it-yourself pub crawl one sunny day in mid August, we decided to stop in here for a beer and to take in the history. If you're a history fan, you'll love this place. It pre-dates the founding of our country by a century so there is quite a bit of history within their walls. It's really a nice charming atmosphere. I'd have to imagine that in the winter when it's decorated for the holidays and they have the fireplaces going it must really be nice in there. Our bartender was really nice and talked a lot about the buildings history while I enjoyed a nice cold White Horse 1673 IPA from the tap. I would definitely recommend stopping by here at least for a drink if not for a full meal. Really neat place.

My husband and I called in just to have a beer and to check out the place. It's a cool place although it is not that old from our perspective. The oldest pub in England, which is close to my old University, has been in operation since 1189. The place must be nice in winter when the fire place in the bar is lit up and beaming with heat. The inside does look like a typical pub in England.

This was our favorite restaurant in Newport. The food was good, but the best part was the slice of history. We came for a late lunch and were the only people in the place, so we really were able to feel that we stepped back in time. A nice escape from the bustle of the seafood restaurants by the harbor.

It was our second visit to White Horse and it was just as impressive as the first! A classic New England style tavern with candlelights and a functional fireplace. Staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing. Wine list was lovely and I will dream about there lobster Mac and cheese until I return! Yum!!

Incredible ambiance, great service, the waitress was pretty knowledgeable about the history of the place, which certainly enriched our experience there. The only downside was the too small portion of my sirloin steak dish which, on the other hand, was delicious. Without a doubt, it is worth the visit!

My boyfriend found this while searching online under obscure Newport. White Horse Tavern is America's oldest tavern and offers brunch, lunch and dinner. The lobster salad blt was simply delicious. The meat was fresh and seasoned lightly with a dill aioli and the croissant it was on was one of the best I've had. The french fries were hand cut and again, seasoned perfectly. The decor is true to the period. Dark tables and chairs, dark wood, and portraits. The service was slow but other than that I can't wait to go back again. I think they're a lil pricey but for the quality you get it is well worth it.

Thankfully there was a spot behind the building in the small parking lot as it was wicked cold and windy this night. We were seated promptly, although I will say, you don't want to sit against the windows as the old building is drafty. We both had the beef Wellington, which was excellent and shared a bottle of wine. Our server was really good and knew his stuff. His recommendations for dessert and an after dinner drink were spot on. I really like this place.

Went there for a Holiday meal. The ambience was perfect! The wood fire in the dining room set the stage for a culinary dream. Our excellent server,Dominick could'n have been more helpful.Descriptions of the various selections to chosing a great wine. Experience TALKS.. The food we chose really was exceptional.Perfectly paired with sides which accented the entire meal. The chef is a local Newport native who really knows his cuisine. Service was great,Michael could't bring warm rustic bread or refill our water glasses fast enough! All in all I would say this is a five star experience

Past 2 visits to newport stopped for drinks. Great spot. Looks and feels like the oldest tavern in America, which is what makes it so charming. While there took a welcomed break from all electronic devices out of respect for a place better suited to hitching your horse than to tweeting to the world your drink choice. Personable, low key bar tender fit the mood of the tavern perfectly.
