We enjoyed the african braii at Middelvlei, a relaxing and tasty experience. It was a very childfriendly place and allthough the sandpit and the kickbikes was allmost worn out the kids really enjoyed them and the lawn. They also had the possibility to feed the small animals close to the restaurant. The place is not fancy at all but as said before, the food is really tasty and you will not leave the table hungry and the staff is serviceminded and seem to love their jobs.

My wife and I took 10 family members (ranging in age from 2 to 79) to Middlevlei to celebrate or wedding anniversary on 28 December 2014. This wine farm is extremely child friendly - lots of toys, plenty of room to run around, a sand pit, a small petting farm, they even had a gentle sprinkler running which the kids loved on this very hot day. Most importantly they provide high chairs. At the same time there is enough room that other people's kids don't become a nuisance. In fact, all the kids from the different family groups played together.Situated on a wine estate with wonderful scenic mountain and vinyard views, Middlevlei produces wines which are delicious, both the reds and the whites. The braai was fabulous with cooked but juicy lamb chops, excellent wors and really tasty chicken kebabs and the barbecue baked pot bread is divine. The guy doing the braai cannot possibly be paid enough! He did a wonderful job and must have been losing weight by the minute on that particular day. He even brews the coffee on the braai. A very good day out and (for the foreign visitor at least) great value for money. I highly recommend a visit for a super, slowly taken, family lunch, relaxing on the stoop under the wonderful Cape sunshine whilst enjoying the local wines.

Dear PrawnsssThank you very much for taking the time to write a review on your Middelvlei Boerebraai experience. It is always good to hear positive things from regular guests! We make our pumpkin fritters from an old, trusted family recipe from ouma Annie, wife to the first owner of Middelvlei! Hope you will soon be back for more! Kind regards The Momberg family

I stopped here with the excellent one day Wine Flies wine tour and we had lunch here plus a wine tasting. The grounds are lovely and the family dogs - a huge black Great Dane, a huge Boer Bull and a cute little dachshund named Grappa make you feel right at home. Lovely place to get a dog fix whilst on holiday! The food which they called a Boerebraai an authentic South African BBQ included butternut squash soup, beef sausage, chicken skewer, salad and lovely grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches. We enjoyed a 2014 unoaked Chardonnay with lunch and a Pinotage/Cab blend. The farm setting is delightful with a beautiful mountain range in the background and cattle and calves plus a wallaby on site! We then took a wine tour and tried their merlot straight from the barrel via a wine thief - a long glass tube! Delightful!

Anyone relying on the Tripadvisor map location to get to Middelvlei will get terribly lost and not reach their desired destination. Please check the Middelvlei website and rectify. It is NOT on the Helshoogte Road! It is at the end of Flamingo Road (Off Adam Tas Road) at the complete other side of Stellenbosch

Excellent WINE! Ideal location, friendly people. We stayed in the Momberg Cottage with our children for 5 days. We felt very at home and our children enjoyed the farm environment. We also enjoyed the old Boere Braai and the wine tasting. This is a lovely location and I can highly reccomend that one visit this farm and enjoy the outdoors where children can play and parents can relax with a glass of wine.

Excellent value and service in a charming, bucolic setting. We could enjoy great braai goodies (braai broodtjies, salads, boerie, choppie, chicken kebab) and taste their wine - bonus: the wine tasting was free since we were eating. Of course, we ordered an extra bottle of Pinotage to help the delicious meal go down. Highly recommended, especially if you cannot braai at home and have guests from out of town who want to taste our national barbecue food. Note that you don't even have to see the braai itself, as the meal is served at your table in "blik" dishes, in a small and comfie farm restaurant.

Not only do Middelvlei produce exquisite wine but after tasting you can sit down and enjoy a good old Boere Braai for lunch. In the winter in doors at the fire or on warm summer days in the meadow next to the dam. Old old Boere kos at its best, pampoen cookies, roosterbrood, pot brood and of course beautifully braaied lamb chops. A must for any real South African visitor to Stellenbosch and a great way to show our traditions to tourists. Well done Ben and Jeanneret

We were a party of 12 adults and 5 children. Loved the child friendly space and staff. We started off with wine-tasting. Great wine. Service was good and the 'picnic' style lunch well worth it. Potbread with pate and jam for starters followed by lamb chop, chicken, boerewors (sausage) with salad and braaibroodtjie (roasted/toasted cheese and onion sandwich) - very tasty. The malva poeding a pleasant finish. The only critism is that the dessert portion is too small! Enjoyed by all and a 'definite must return'.

We had the pleasure of enjoying a boerebraai lunch here and doing a little bit of tasting and blending, which was great fun. Us is also my ten year old daughter who loved the 'wine' tasting of various juices and learning a bit on how wine is made. She loved it. The food was very good, the Middelvlei Pinotage was so delicious that I have to find a supplier here in Holland to have it again. The setting of the winery is also gorgeous. And there were some animals running around, including dog Grappa, always fun for children. I loved my time here and would recommened to anyone on winetour, and certainly with children as this must be one of the most childfriendly winieries in the region.

There are few wine farms left that offer an authentic, old school, down to earth, 'barefoot' wine tasting - and Middelvlei is easily one of the very best. You're likely to get taken on a tour by one of the Momberg family members who will share intimate details a simple sommelier could never hope to do. We were fortunate enough to be shown around by Ben, along with the three dogs: Merlot, Papsak and Alsace. The wines themselves are uncomplicated and infinitely palatable - I've fallen in love with their unique Shiraz (a lot more demure and sophisticated that the usual in your face big grape personality this varietal is famous for). They also offer a Boerebraai which, if you are an international visitor, is a must. This is traditional South Africa farm food: barbeque style. The atmosphere is relaxed and child friendly so block out a good few hours to savour wine, food and great outdoors. Kids are free to run around and experience the joys of farm life (there's even a mini zoo with goats, geese, tortoise and wallabies!). Highly recommended if you like to experience the 'real' side of things. I loved it - and left with a case of wine to prove it. And I'll definitely be back in February for the harvest where you can pick and stomp grapes.

Stumbled across Middelvlei whilst passing by. We've enjoyed some of their wines in the past, so decided to pop in on a whim. As soon as we were out of our vehicle, we were welcomed by the friendly hounds that abide there. The wines on offer were of a good quality, and extremely keenly priced too. There's also a small menagerie to one side - ideal if you have kids in tow. Will re-visit.

Even though we live close by in Cape Town, we decided to overnight in Stellenbosch. The self-catering accommodation on Middelvlei is comfortable and spotlessly clean. It's not far to the attractions that Stellenbosch has to offer but still isolated enough to feel as if one is far from the madness of the city. It was lovely having the owners dogs visiting and being able to have a fire (with ample wood available) in the cottage. The "boerebraai" was excellent. Even though there was a 21st luncheon happening at the venue, there was enough space for everyone. The presentation of the food and the packaging was very appealing.

We went with 3 young, energetic boys and the setting was great. There was space to play, animals to pet and even balls and scooters! The relaxed atmosphere meant that the kids could be themselves without disturbing anyone.
